International 424 diesel battery size

Does anyone know the proper battery size or part number for a 424 diesel because my battery went bad and won’t start the tractor anymore. For starters the stickers are all worn off but that ain’t a big deal Napa can get me one based on size but I don’t think the one in it is the proper size because there is a piece of 1 by wood on each side of the battery compartment to hold the bat tight but I just may be dumb idk haha.

Also is this tractor supposed to have a full battery box because the battery is bungee corded to the inside of the fender. It’s in the proper location just wondering if the pieces of wood are supposed to make up for a battery box of some kind🤷‍♂️

Yes it would have had a real battery box.IT probably has rotted away over time from battery acid and fumes/gases on the steel. Now I would just go to the 31 stud top battery. Plenty big for winter cold starting and the stud top stays clean with little corrosion to the connections. Also no stupid clamp deals on lead posts. Just tighten the nut down with the cable eye over the stud. For the battery box you could make one pretty easy from some old barrel steel. Just bend the 4 sides and cut a plate to fit the bottom and weld together.

I wouldn't call it a box. Mine is more like a flat piece of sheet metal with a lip to the fender. Supposed to have hold downs but mine doesn't. I use a group 31 from Rural King as they are much cheaper. Keep the wood unless you find hold downs. Mine is a gas burner and I use the same battery in my Ford diesel.

Had my 2424 for almost 40 years and the blocks of wood and bungee cord are all I have had keeping the battery in place. Have replaced the blocks and cords 2 or 3 times over the years. Mine is gas, so any old battery will do. Have been recycling the car and truck batteries to the tractor as I replace them the past 15 years or so.

Bought the identical battery under tractor supply’s brand about two months ago just because they were closest and tractor starts and stays charged just fine now but I don’t see me ever finding the correct battery cover.
