International 574 or 674 Forward and Reverse selector shaft replacement method

Hi, we unfortunately have just experienced the F-N-R selector shaft shear off at the O ring groove. Our tractor is stuck in forward and we cannot select reverse! I believe it is possible to go in and remove the remains of the old shaft and fit a new one by removing the hydraulic pump and MCV? The opening in the side of the transmission is quite big and just below! Has anyone actually done this and confirm it is possible? Is there a master spline so one can only fit the internal arm in one position on the shaft otherwise that could present a problem! The alternative is to remove the top cover off the transmission which is a massive and time consuming job! Thanks for any advice or comments. Cheers

Here is a post from an old IH Mechanic, basically you have to take a 7/8" open end wrench and cut part of the handle off.
I have changed many of these parts, at the Case-IH dealer, where I have worked. You can remove the lever and replace it on the left side of the rear transmission. Just drain the oil, remove the MCV control valve ( the plate that hold the hydraulic pump and filter) With a short 7/8 open wrench, loosen the sealed nut, remove the broken shaft and replace with the new one. It has a big spline for the timing. Just align the short lever with the fork.

We got so we just welded them up ground back round and stuck back in . That o-ring in the shaft was a p poor design. O-ring should have been in the housing not on the shaft or a bigger shaft used. I will not say it can or can not be changed that way. We always just pulled the lid off the top. usually because we had something else to fix in there anyway. or a leak to seal up that required it come off. With a loader on depending on model could make it a lot more work to reach things.

Hi Bernard, thanks for the support. I confirm that it is possible and have done it! Saves a heck of a lot of time! Very satisfying too. Cheers!

Hi everyone, with advice from JimB and my instincts, I confirm it IS possible to replace the FNR selector shaft done through the opening in the LH side of the transmission once the hydraulic pump MCV unit is removed. It saves a heck of a lot of time. If anyone is contemplating doing this job, contact me and I can give them full advice and some pictures. Was very satisfying to do. Cheers
