International TD-8C oil leak.

I picked up a TD-8C power-shift with ~2000 hours on it last year for a song as it would slowly stop pushing at around 5 mins run time. The main issue was a difficult find but easy fix. The trans pump had housing damage and it was sucking air frothing the trans fluid. New pump and no more issues there.

While I had the engine out I replaced all the seals and gaskets. Only thing I didn't do is pull the head. Nothing on the machine or in the engine would lead me to believe it has more than the hours listed on the hobbs meter and it still functions. Was used on a farm to push cow manure and that's basically it.

As of now it's all reassembled but I have one issue stopping me from putting it to work. After running for ~20 minuets oil will start coming out of the vent tube up by the oil fill cap in the valve cover. And not a small amount. I did some research and most people say its the injection pump shaft seal leaking and overfilling the oil pan. However, my pan is NOT overfilled, in fact it's a bit low (about the same amount as lost through the tube) and the oil is still good viscosity and no trace of diesel smell.
Other people suggest excessive blow by can cause this. I don't think this is the case as the engine runs like a dream, starts fine, plenty of power, and before the oil starts spilling out the tube, if I take the filler cap off, there's less pressure coming out of the valve cover than pretty much every other diesel engine I own. And that's with the oil dipstick tightly sealed. There is no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil, no bubbling in the radiator, oil pressure is 30psi+ at hot idle.

Any ideas?

Was there any evidence of oil coming out of the breather when you bought the machine?

You had the engine out and the only thing you didn't remove was the head. What exactly DID you do?

Trying to see if this was a pre-existing condition or something you did.

Problem solved. At some point in the last 40+ years some mechanical mastermind thought it would be a good idea to braze a custom "splash shield" inside the valve cover under the filler neck/vent. This shield was basically cup shaped and held oil until it overflowed out the vent tube. I removed the custom oil collection cup and replaced the original metal vent filter. Ran it for over an hour today with no issues. Nothing left to do now but find more dirt to push.
