JD 116 - no fuel at the carb

I recently got an 80's John Deere 116. Tried to start it and it does run on starting fluid really well but I'm not getting fuel to the carb. I suspected the vacuum pump on the carb as I had read that was the most common. I took it apart and 2 small springs went everywhere. Does anyone have a manual or a picture of how it goes back together? I've read there is an electric pump under the battery as well. I found fuel hoses running from it to the tank and to the engine but no wires attached to it. Does anyone have a wiring diagram or how it's wired? I've also hear they are usually bad after sitting and need to be replaced but haven't read of what's the best option.

I'm not looking to put a whole lot of money into it as it's just to teach my son how to drive but, it's of no use if it doesn't run.

The John Deere Parts Catalog has an exploded view of that diaphragm pump. For what they cost, I'd just replace the whole thing. You have heard correctly that they are notorious for going bad. I only see one spring in this particular drawing.
