Jd 2350 general questions

Hello all ,not sure if it’s permissible to address two questions in one post but here goes. have attached a photo of the temp gauge on a John Deere 2350 I have been working on for a while. I would like to ask does the temperature range shown in the photo reasonable or does it seem too hot? Photo was taken after approximately two hours of good work in relatively high grass with a 6 foot rotary mower. Just happened to notice one day that the gauge was right on the red so I found where the thermostat was located and opened it up. Only thing left of the thermostat was the ring and the arc, the button, spring, etc. was nowhere to be found. Read lots of posts, and started by pulling the hose off the bottom of the radiator, what came out looked a lot like heavy, rusty metal primer slop. back flushed till I was blue in the face and I’m now finally to the point where the water in the radiator is relatively clear, no antifreeze just distilled water. I was reluctant to put too much pressure on the engine drain plug so I did not backflush from that direction. I only read of one post where somebody used heat on the engine drain plug so I decided to take a pass. wandering if I should contemplate the vinegar bath or if it seems good. any opinions are appreciated. Second question… currently using an aftermarket hydraulic transmission fluid as I did not want to spend major money on the John Deere product until I knew what I had as far as tractor reliability…aftermarket fluid is designated for John Deere. would anyone advise me to drain and refill with John Deere product? thank you very much.

That temp seems perfectly normal, especially after mowing high grass for a couple hours, which can be one of the tougher things one does on a tractor.
As long as you’re using a fluid that meets Deere’s specs, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I agree with MJMJ on both points. I think your operator's or service manual has some info on the temperatures as related to the colors on the gauge. You can use an "infrared" temp gun to check the temperature at both ends of the head to see if the gauge is near right, if you want.
