JD 820 excess oil in rear

we have an 1957 820 that seems to be leaking motor oil into the rear I have been told that there is a seal that goes bad and have had some people on here a while back instruct me on where it was and how to replace it I am just getting to where i have had the time to take it apart i am wordering if the seall is under the tin covet between the crank and back tire and witch shaft it usually is

I think you got a big job ahead of you. I'm pretty sure the LH crankcase cover has to come off. Parts book and an I&T manual will show you for sure. JD may even sell a service manual for those. All that's under that tin cover is the tranny shaft and gears. That's where you go to change over to the extra special high priced slow 1st. gear. And likely more problems to be found like loose and worn out bearings.
 
It will be the PTO drive seal that is under the LH cast iron crankcase cover. It is under the cover on the lower right side in the photos. I found out too late on my 820 - bought it in 1993 from Manitoba - ran great - engine oil level would go down slowly - thought that the engine was just burning oil - changed rear end oil and found twice the amount of oil in there that should be - this was my first Two cylinder tractor, and I did not understand how the engine and trans oil were seperated - I thought that someone had added too much oil - the tractor had sat for a month and I started it one day without first checking the oil level in the engine. Took it for a drive - looked down at the oil gauge and there was no oil pressure -I immediately stopped the tractor, but the damage was done - connecting rod bearing spun on the crankshaft - had to buy replacement crank, connecting rod - the rest of the tractor was fine, but I did not have the money to spare to repair the tractor which included - machine shop work - head redone, new rings, all new gaskets, crankshaft and connecting rod -the tractor sat for four years until I could get it finished and back together - I am happy to hear that you did not do any damage to the tractor. Once we had the cover off of my 820 we found that the seal had come out of the bore and was just floating around on the shaft. We installed two seals in there since there was room in case one fails. We used red loctite on the bore to help keep them in place. I will never forget the day I did the damage, or the day that we were able to start it again.

the cast iron cover that the crank sticks out of ??? not the stamped steel cover I was afraid of having to take the whole tractor back apart just got it running this fall after almost 5 years of being in pieces in the shop thanks
 
yes, you remove the big iron cast cover thats around the crankshaft. & the shaft is at the lower rear of it, leads into the trans.
 
the seal is on the outside of the tractor behind the PTO drive gear- you don't need to dismantle the rear of the tractor - the PTO drives off of the crankshaft through gears - inside the rear of the tractor there are 90 degree bevel gears in the rear of the tractor to move the power to the the PTO shaft.
