John Deere 1010 clutch issue.

John Deere 1010 gas tractor with a clutch that will not fully disengage. It sat for a couple years, not running. Made some motor repairs, new pilot bearing, throw-out bearing and friction disc. Motor runs great, if it is started in gear, it tries to creep forward. If started in neutral, it’s impossible to get into any gear. I used the JD 227 gauge to adjust the pressure plate. I understand that this is a non-synchronized transmission. If I start it in gear, I am unable to shift to another gear without shutting the motor down. I ‘ve seen a couple similar threads with similar issues. Would anyone have advice to return my raking tractor to operation? Please and Thank you. Happy holidays.
