Anybody know what the difference is for theses two different shovels, or shovel vs spring tooth on these old two cylinder cultivators. I have a two row John Deere cultivator from the 30’s for my ‘37 A. I have 3 different cultivators with different choices.

Thanks
Robert

Well the ones on the outside for track wiping will move sideways some as you go through the filed so they would not be so good in front next to the row. Might prune roots or take out the whole plant if to close. The other in the middle will be a stiff shank with just a forward backward trip motion . They will not wobble around like the other 2 rear spring shanks will and so would be the better choice to have next to the row for that reason. Other than thatr I have no idea as to any differences.

Makes sense. Thanks. I will put on the rear hook up then the spring tooth to sweep away tracks. Not sure otherwise what the rear rig is for.

The front shovels are for digging in harder ground so need to be made for that. The back are just for loosing the wheel tracks without ridging the soil. First Deere was a 38 A and just had the front sections, no rear sections and hand lift. Later a 49 B without the rear sections and later got them. Then put that cultivator on the 46 B and the 49 B got a 4 row set on 30 inch rows and no rear gangs as they would have made the weight a bit much for the power troll While the 51 A had 4 row on set for 40" rows with the rear gangs. The cultivators for the 38 A were only frame mounted with brackets to hook over the frame when mounting to mane it easier mounted and then that bracket had a long bolt thru the top above the frame to help stiffen the frame carrying those heavy cultivators as those tractors did not have a provision for the top bars to hook to the front to help support the outer ends of the cultivator of the cultivator frame like the newer tractors did and then came the quicktatch hitch that made it so much easier to mount and it had the top bars to stiffen help carry the outer ends of the cultivator frame. Before the quicktatch the top bars bolted to the top of the pedistal to help carry the outer ends of the frame. You can mount a quicktatch cultivator on your unstyled tractor that will help stiffin the frame of the tractor for carrying that heavy cutvator frame. To put the cultivator on an unstyled tractot there was an atchment made to bolt on the pedistal to use the top of the 4 bars to stiffen the mount for the tractor and use the cultivators made for the 4 bars, 2 on each side for carrying the load and not hurting the tractor frame. Got the 38 A in 1957 and the cultivators came out of a junk yard. The 49 B replaced the 38 A in 1960

The 200 series were made for the late styled tractors and the quick tatch frame but could be used without it by using the top bars bolted directly to the pedistal.
