I have a JD 4410 sub compact 35 horse tractor. I am looking for a corn and soybean planter. I am considering JD planter 7000 either a 2 or 3 row planter does anyone know the weight? and if my tractor will handle this planter. I really like the concept of a no till however I do have a 5-foot tiller if needed. I am planting 5-7 Acre food plot, Is the 7000 a good choice or should I consider a different option. I want to keep the cost below $4,000. Thanks Chuck

Depending on the conversation the weight could vary. The one I have has the fertilizer in the insecticide boxes. You should not have to worry on the weight. Mine is run with a farmall 350. I plant 10 acres with it for production. I modified the hookup to match the fastpitch 3 point conversion and modified the drive wheel to have a spring pressure float so it doesn't skip in uneven ground. When with this model for the accuracy of the finger pickup and parts availability there is still a lot of corn put in with 7000 row units.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "3-row." It would make no sense because you'd be planting two rows into the tractor's wheel tracks, which is not desirable. That or it would be offset to one side which would make things awkward.

Nothing wrong with a 7000. That design is still being produced and is in wide use today. You can get almost every part of the row unit brand new.

The 2-row 7000 planters are cut down from larger planters with the 3pt added. There are usually one or two of them "brand new" at the larger consignment sales around my area.

There's a place in Pennsylvania that makes a pull-type 3-row with JD units, but I think it's intended for Amish farmers to pull with horses.

I so appreciate all of the thoughtful comments and helpful information. What can I plant with the 7000 besides corn and soybeans? If I purchase one without the fertilizer set up will it be cost effective to add this? Am I better off holding out for a unit that is already set up for it.

with the right meters installed, sunflowers, sorghum, all kinds of beans and cowpeas, pumpkins (but they might be a little thick) Some people prefer to split up their fertilizer application by broadcasting before planting, and then again after the corn is growing. It's up to you how you want to do it. I know some of the plot planter conversions they adapt the insecticide boxes behind the seed boxes to apply fertilizer, but keep in mind that only does surface application. If you want a regular fertilizer box for furrow application, I'd say to look for a planter already set up.

I got the parts for adding fertilizer when I bought mine. The install was no too bad. I would recommend getting one already installed if you go that route. Also one with the transmission will give you more options. Mine has one speed for fertilizer and corn an adjustment of one impacts the other. It will be faster to broadcast the fertilizer first. I have attached images of mine and some of the other modifications I have made.

Great information guys, Thank you! I know nothing about planters and the more I research this the more I realize just how little I know. I did not even know there is a transmission option. And I hate to admit I don't even know what an insecticide box is. It is going to take a miracle if I ever get a row crop planted. OK I do have a 600# capacity broadcaster I will broadcast some more Urea and Lime on the corn that my neighbor planted for me it is about 8 inches high now.
