liners and pistons for 282

I am in the process of replacing the beyond fixing 560 engine with a 560D engine that came from a salvage yard
i pulled the heads looks like this engine is very tired going to need rebuild. It was my late fathers tractor so i have
a desire to keep it running. looking at a D-282 parts catalog for pistons and liners it list several with and diffrent
serial numbers ? i cannot find any number on the block or head to determine what parts i should order so my questions
is the pistons have the serial numbers on them would this number help with the liner if someone could cross ref them?

or can I measure the top of the sleeve / liner to determine the correct rebuild kit ?

282 sleeves and pistons is just that , no options. I have a set of new old stock I could look for the numbers. There was a sleeve press fitting difference but I didn’t run into that. Better post your serial number is important. Should be by the oil filter housing.

very early 282 is a slip-fit sleeve, then what you would call a standard sleeve and then i was told by 1967 went to the 310 motor.
i have a very early 282 in a 706 and you can take some out by hand.

The early D236/282 blocks used wide flange slip fit block sleeves, the head gasket compression ring sealed on the sleeve flange. The LATE D236/282 blocks use the thin flange HEAVY PRESS fit block sleeves, head gasket does NOT contact sleeves at all but seals on the block. That's the serial number break reason.

well having the serial number is not an option its simply not there so i must figure this out another way . I measured with a set of calibers and looks like the flange on top of liner is approx 4"-150ths . i did lay the old head gasket and it appears to cover parts of the liner . i also notice that the pistons have an L stamped on each of them. so maybe it appears to be an early serial number?

when you figure what you have get a book for that motor, the slip fit sleaves on my 706 it was either .004 or .007 that the top of the liner to the deck of the block could be above.

Post the actual tractor serial number , it’s better than no number as long as the engine is original.

The block serial number is near the oil filter base area, UNDER 71778 is the EARLY block with the slip fit sleeves that have the wide flange. AFTER 71778 is the late block with the heavy press fit sleeves with the narrow flange.

Okay, once in a while you run across a block with no serial number. But that is very rare. It is much more likely to be there and you just haven't found it. Keep in mind that the serial number is an individual number stamped into the block. It is not going to be boldface and jump out at you like the part number etc. that were cast in the foundry as a feature of the raw casting. If the engine has ever been repainted, it is likely the serial number digits have been filled with paint and are no longer visible.

Per the parts catalog, the number is located "stamped on the left-hand side of the engine on a pad located below the oil pump shaft support". Get out a scraper and start looking.

i just looked at all 12 of my 660's and on the 3 of the 4 1959's there is no engine serial numbers stamped on the flat spot above the oil cooler. the 1959 farmall 560 has no engine number also. so i came to the conclusion they were not fussy in 1959. all the other ones past 59 tractors have the numbers stamped there. i asked for tractor serial number for a reason. as yours might be a 59. i dont even think a 560 has that other press fit sleeve, till you get into the 706.

Anyways i appreciate every ones reply to this post to figure the parts needed
My 560 has the heavy press fit sleeves because it had an IH short block installed years ago. Just look at where the head gasket compression ring sets is the easy way to tell what block sleeve arrangement you have, the original wide flange slip fit sleeves the ring set ON the sleeve flange. The later blocks the gasket did not set on the sleeve at all but just OUTSIDE the flange directly on the block.

Exactly ! There is nothing hard here , My bet is the early slip fit sleeves. Procrastinators.🤷🏻‍♂️ Plus u have the head off and the difference explained.

Yeah i called the parts department on this web site and he directed me to Reliance power parts because of the diffrent options after checking the diffrent kits it looks like it may come down to the three diffrent thrust flange bearings for these engines 4.00,3.873,3.75 so still waiting on them to verify my selection yeah wish Internation had got it right the first try lol.

they did, but i dont understand this ordering parts till a person has the engine tore down then u know what u need. then u make up your need list. a bird in the hand is better than 3 in the bush.
