Location of 310 crankcase vent

I have seen quite a few 310 diesel engines with a vented crankcase, all that I have seen have been in the area of #3 or #4 cylinder, this one came to me from the local tractor mechanic with the hole at #6. 1800 B, unfortunately probably not worh fixing.

I think 1855s were the most prone to it. I've heard stories of those ventilating the block the first day off the dealers lot. If you had a good one, it was a good one. If you had a bad one, it looked like that.

We had a 1855 vent itself at the #5 piston. Operating a potato harvester and happened to see the piece go flying. Engine still ran. Stopped digging potatoes to get a different tractor and drove the newly vented one home about 3 miles. Oddest thing I have ever seen.

My 1855 ventilated both sides of the block at the #2 cylinder. When I tore the engine down, #5 cylinder was getting ready to go to. The issue was the 2 piece rod bushings.

We had one blow out on the #1 cylinder. Running wide open on the last 11 rows of beans for the year. Knocked the injection pump off if the left sideand broke the motor mount bolt on the right side. Found and installed a replacement 310 then it broke a crank the next fall discing stalks. Needless to say, it has a Perkins in it now

Just finished putting a Cummins in mine.

One other 1855 that had involved a weak engine and a weak hydraulic pump. My son planting sweet corn had to really rev it up to make the fertilizer auger work. Well, when it went, it broke the flywheel off the crank. Needless to say that one is now running with a Perkins from a used White 2-105. Bolted up the entire front end and we still have. Oddest thing about it going, was I was on vacation and he didn't want to let me know the tractor blew up. He rented a John Deere to finish planting. I found out when I got back from vacation and the JD was still in the yard. I think my other one that I drove home got a replacement 310 I had sitting around from another tractor that had tranny issues. Both are still on the farm.

I have heard of the 310 diesel having this problem, does the 310 gases have this issue too? We just bought a 1800 with a 1850 gas motor in it and I think it’s a 310.
