Hello,
About a year ago, I purchased a Perrin garden tractor. It uses a 6HP Wisconsin AEHD engine with a 1945 serial number, a Ford Model A gearbox and differential, and has no sheet metal other than that on the engine. A bit of information on the tractors is known. The information that I have gathered on the internet suggests that the tractors were built in Tacoma, Washington around 1946 by a man named Raymond Perrin. Under 150 of them were made. Production of them may have begun again a year or two later in Portland, Oregon under the name Ground Hog. Ground Hog tractors appear to have been painted a different color than Perrin tractors. There were also about 100 Perrin crawlers built in Portland, which were a similar size as the Perrin tractor. The rights to building these crawlers may later have been bought by another company and manufactured as the Windolph crawler. The main distinguishing feature of the Perrin tractors is that they have "PERRIN" cast into the front wheels. The Ground Hog tractors have "GROUND HOG" cast into the front wheels.
The Perrin tractor that I purchased appears to have been made in 1945 or 1946 (maybe 1947). It's engine and transmission has been completely overhauled, and everything operates very well. It is painted orange with gray wheels. My research, as well as some original paint inside the air cleaner, suggests that the tractors were originally painted red, perhaps with yellow wheels. I have a sales receipt for the tractor when it was sold used in 1957 to the family I bought it from, as well as black-and-white photos of the tractor from 1957. The receipt and photos lead me to believe that the wheels were painted a lighter color than the rest of the tractor, and that the steering wheel and muffler are not original to the tractor. My wish is to return it to original condition. The photo from 1957 also suggests that the original muffler may have been simply a stack about two feet high, and upon removing the muffler that was on it originally, the engine's exhaust manifold pipe does not have the threads that a typical AEH muffler would screw on to. I also believe that a round gas tank was original to the tractor.
Does anyone have any knowledge on these tractors, specifically on their original paint colors, mufflers, and steering wheels? I would greatly appreciate information to help me return my tractor to original condition, and would also be very interested to hear any other known information on Perrin tractors. I have included photos of the tractor on this post.
Thank you so much for your help!
