Massey 165 Hydraulic Questions

I have a 1969 massey 165 non multipower I purchased. I had to rebuild the transmission. But I have it running and moving fine now. My question is the hydraulics beside the seat for the 3 point the far right should be draft control and essentially should not so anything unless you are using a implement that you need draft control? The closest lever should be your up and down control of the 3 point and if you raise it past the stopper it should be constant pump?

The reason I ask is because the lever closest to the seat does not seem to do anything with the right lever in any position but the right lever will controll the 3 point but it is very, very touchy when you are moving the 3 point up and down.

I removed the auxiliary hydraulic control valve that was right under the seat and put a standard cap on until I can get the 3 point correct and the I will install the loader back on the tractor and plumb it in with all new components.

Did you pull the top cover during your transmission work? If you did there is a few adjustments that need to occur. Draft is all the way up then just use the position control on all the ones I've been around.

Yes I had the transmission completely apart I pulled the top. We pulled the cover and removed the pin before we pulled the top cover. I don't think what was connected to the top cover was touched. It was just lifted out and set aside until the Trans was hooked back up the the rear end

There is a procedure in the service manual to set the top cover after it is pulled. I think you need to adjust it to the pump. There is a little screw on the arm that touches the pump roller. You will need to hang a book specified amount of weight from the lower 3pt arms. I don't recall the exact amount (800lbs or so I think). Do not connect into the top link.

Ok I saw the procedure but we had not adjusted anything so I assumed it would be OK. Out of curiosity, do you think that would cause the position control lever to not do anything?

I believe it could. When the top cover went back in there is no promise that it is exactly where it was before. You turn that wheel and 1 click can make the 3-point act different during adjustment. So, this is a game of a couple of thousandths making a difference. You could easily be some many thousandths from where that arm was before based on the slop in the bolt holes up top. Before I did the adjustment myself I threw a cover back on and it all worked but once I performed the adjustment (because I had the top cover apart for a new cylinder), I became a believer that it matters even on a simple removal and back on.

Ok. I appreciate the information. I will get it done by the end of the week and let you know how it goes. Not to sure how I am going to come up with 800lbs without the top link hooked up. I have hay bales but that would require the top link.

Please do verify that number with the book. If you have any front weights, I just used a 1 inch solid bar and hung them by the handles through the lower links.

Did you fix your issue? I have a similar issue with one i just purchased and the previous owner had split the tractor years ago.

I took it to the local dealer and had them mess with it. They told me they replaced a couple o-rings and something on the top cover had fallen off. Cost me 60$ in parts and like 500 in labor. Pretty expensive but I didn't have to learn how to adjust everything. And everything works perfectly.
