Massey Ferguson 165 3-point

I inherited a Massey Ferguson 165. The 3-point will not lower without weight on it. In order to attach an implement, body weight is needed to push down the arms. Any thoughts on why this would happen? Everything else seems to work fine and will raise and lower with an implement attached.

If there are grease fittings just inside the arms try giving them a couple shots first. Next is to loosen the two bolts a bit on the arm retainer plates, the bolt lock tabs need bent away from the bolt heads first. I'd try backing the bolts off about 1/2 turn each then see if that helps. If so, bend the lock tabs back against the bolt heads to hold them in place.

Thank you, I will give that a try. It seems like the hydraulic pressure is not releasing completely though. When I start the tractor the arms raise even with the control down. I can push them down by hand with body weight but they still raise with no weight on them.

Has the hyd oil been replaced lately? It could have the wrong oil=too thick.
I don't know about that. It looks clean and full. I was thinking about replacing the fluid and cleaning/changing the filter but have not looked up the details yet.

Okay I looked through the other posts on changing the hydraulic filter that said to remove the right side cover that has the PTO lever on it to access the filter. I tried to remove the cover but it was attached to something on the inside. I moved it out about an inch and then put it back. I looked at a few other posts and found one that said the filter could be in the front of the tractor between the oil cooler and the radiator. That is where I found it, cleaned and reinstalled. I also installed a new dual remote valve under the seat so that I can run a small round bailer. After filling the transmission with M-1129A oil equivalent, I have no hydraulic pressure and the 3-point does not lift at all. Does the system need to be bled? I would not think so with the pump submersed in the oil but no oil reached the filter in the front. I removed the filter housing and filled it with fluid to see if that helped get things moving but there was no change. I can not hear the pump engaging when I shift the auxiliary control lever to constant pump position. Could I have detached something from the pump while trying to access the filter from the side cover?
The tractor serial # is 9A 58366 which looks to be manufactured in Detroit in 1968. It has multi-power and independent PTO that previously worked but I have not tried the multi-power after changing the fluid. The side cover that I tried to remove has 2 remote hydraulic lines coming out of the cover that are attached to the left fender. The PTO seems to work and feels like it engages as it should but doesn't stop now in the off position.

If tractor has the two side cover lines on the independent PTO that cover CAN NOT be removed UNLESS the lift cover is removed FIRST. DO NOT remove the lift cover before reading a service manual first or you WILL do more damage than you have now.

does the tractor have remotes? my 135 has remotes with 2 handles that sometimes get in the wrong position not allowing 3 pt to do what i want it to. good luck

His tractor has a separate auxiliary pump and remote valve system that does not use the three point pump like your 135 and some other MF models did.
