Massey Ferguson 35 transmission

I’m interested in buying a 35 that has transmission problems, the owner doesn’t know what type of problem, he bought it at auction and was told bad transmission. So I have no idea if gears are bad or if just stuck in 2 gears. Doesn’t run, but supposed to. But I can’t work on it to get it running unless I buy it. Both back tires have large hole in sidewall, so it needs tires also. I think the price is too high.
But I was needing to know how hard these transmissions are to work on and if parts are available. It has the 3 speed with high and low to make 6 gears. Can parts still be found for them? The asking price which he said is firm is $1000. That sounds way to high to me for a tractor that doesn’t run has transmission problems and needs rear tires.
What do all of yall think about it? Is it even worth considering? I think the engine just needs points and wires, but I’m just guessing, he was told it ran when he bought it, but has never heard it run, and he has had it 15-20 years setting Inside a shed. The transmission is what worries me. I don’t want to get into it and not be able to get parts or end up needing a 1000 worth of parts, that would be getting into the range of being able to buy a running and functioning similar tractor.
What do yall think? Walk away and keep looking? Or take a chance? I don’t have a lot of money to be spending.
Thanks, any feedback would be helpful.

It sounds to me like you should keep looking.

How much should a running and working 35 cost? Doesn’t have to be pretty, just useable.
Thanks for the response.
I kinda like that particular type of tractor.

Prices can vary greatly by area and condition. I generally see asking prices of $2000 to $5500 (again depending on options and condition) for those, 135, 150, 235, 245 class Masseys.

Year of the Tractor...?
My parents purchased a new MF 35 X in 1963,with the Perkins diesel engine,6 speed transmission,(3 forward gears plus H/L range) and differential lock.
The engine was totally overhauled in 1984/85 and had run approximately 100 hours, when I retired and claimed the Tractor from my brother in 2013.
The Transmission had never been mechanically worked on,same said for the three point hitch HYDRAULIC PUMP,as well as the dual clutch, pressure plate assembly.
All oil drain plugs in the "common Transmission,Hydraulic,Differential oil sump" had cuttings attached to the magnetic chip detectors.
I removed the Transmission, installed Transmission on a work stand, stripped the transmission, and invested more than $2000.00 dollars (PARTS) as many components were NOT serviceable.

I had purchased an original parts catalogue (eBay)and still had the original MF 35 service manual......................:)
The dual clutch assembly had NOT been adjusted properly over its entire life, and the clutch assembly was NON serviceable!

The three point hitch lift arms would jump and jerk as they moved up or down.
Upon inspection, the pump had been subjected to moisture, thus the pump was non serviceable.

After the above was totally repaired, the Tractor runs perfectly!
All parts were available, and fortunately,"YESTERDAYS TRACTORS" supplied many NEW OLD stock parts...:)
Cost of new DUAL CLUTCH assembly ?.......several hundreds of dollars in 2021........

Cost of new Hydraulic pump assembly ?.. $243.00 dollars in 2017
The Tractor you are describing, is $350.00 or less!

Tractor, POSSIBLY could be purchased, parted out and make a profit.

"IF" the Transmission has to be dismantled, and "IF" you have never done such an undertaking you are in for an EDUCATION........!

NOT all MF 35's 6 speeds have the same internal components.

A PARTS catalogue is a must.......
The Serial # of the MF 35 is a must to KNOW,to identify correct internal components in the Transmission...
Case in point:
Some MF 35's ran the engine at 1500 RPM to obtain 540 PTO RPM
Other MF35's ran the engine at 1700 RPM to obtain 540 PTO RPM
Different gears in the above to obtain Standard PTO speed..

A $1000.00 in parts..........
If the Transmission ,Clutch assembly, and or Hydraulic pump are requiring attention, $1000.00 wont even make a dent in the total cost for parts.

Owner since new of a 1963 MF 35 X 6 speed,no multipower, diesel Perkins engine.
