Massey Ferguson 65 Starter Wiring

Hello,
I have a diesel Massey 65. There is a wire that runs from the starter button to some kind of switch and then another wire that comes out of that switch to the solenoid. What is the name of that switch? I had a wire pop out and I figure it needs replaced. I found an old Massey book so I’ll take a picture of what it looks like, generally speaking. It’s not related to my 65. It’s just an old one my grandpa had laying around. It’s number 22. The book gives various answers but the internet is not throwing any parts. Is it a resistor? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Neutral safety starting switch, perhaps? Is it activated by the clutch pedal or the gearshift mechanism?

The switch in you grandpa's book is not the same switch.

It might be helpful to know if you encountered a loss of some electrical some function? A photo and description of the location of the wire on your tractor would be very helpful. The neutral switch I believe is somewhere near the gear shifters.

This is what it is. 65 is a diesel if that matters. No electrical problem other than this

I know. It was for reference. I took it out and this is what it is

As Brown David posted that is the neutral start safety switch. The part number 181140M92. There is a cover boot for its part number 180776M1.
You can use those part numbers to find the right switch if you need one. The YT store, or PartsASAP, should have them.

With the Hi - lo shifter in neutral use an ohmmeter to see it there is continuity between the two terminals. If so, you may just need to repair the wire end. I remove the clips then use a crimp on male "bullet" end (that fits into the termina) on the wire end. Push it into the terminal and put the clip back to hold it in. That is how they are OEM. Some replacement switches may have screws in the terminals and wires will need ring ends.

Just to clarify. When I said the switch in your grandfather's book is not same, it was because the switch in that picture is a starter switch, and not like your switch, if one recognizes it in the picture. It was good you tried to help identify it. I am attaching a link to the online parts book you can use for free on the AGCO parts website, which should help you going forward.

MF 65 Parts Book #690237

For reference, as I expect you will want to look for the correct manuals, here are the publication numbers shown on the AGCOpubs site. AGCOpubs is the official bookstore for the AGCO brands. You can use these publication numbers as you check other places to see that the manual is correct for your tractor. AGCOpubs

Operator's Manual # 690591M1
Parts Manual # 690237M5
Service Manual # 1448812M92 (assembled manual)
or # 1448812M1 (Packet- all the pages and dividers, you put them in your own 3 ring binder. price is less)

The base number of the publication (or part) is most important. The M suffix and following digits designate printing or such. Just as the suffixes on part numbers shows a revision.

Edited to correct spelling.

If your tractor still starts with that disconnected then some one has bypassed the neutral switch and its circuit. At least I did not see where you said that it does not start. Not a real uncommon occurrence for someone to bypass them to get going again and then never repair it correctly. Some guys, particularly Ford 8N (9N & 2N) owners get wound up when people bypass them. I don’t see it as a big deal because I ran Farmalls and they weren’t equipped with neutral or clutch safety switches until the early 60’s. Is a machine that has them safer, yes.
Just FYI, in my opinion there is no need to repeat the same photos to reply to everyone’s reply that questioned what you had going on. Anyone who is a worthy forum viewer and responder will glean through all the replies and access the information needed to help you. In my opinion anytime a thread can be kept shorter in terms of the number of replies there will be less of a chance of confusion. YMMV (your mileage may vary)
