McCormick Deering 10-20 Carburetor

I have a McCormick Deering 10-20 with Ensign Carburetor (picture). The tractor had not been run for decades and it was restored with the help of my high school Ag Mechanics students. It was a tedious 3 year process to carefully overhaul, repair the sheet metal, etc., and paint the tractor, but it looks great. The final issue is the carburetor. It has been taken apart multiple times and we cannot get it to stop leaking. A new cork float was installed along with a new needle valve. We also replaced the cork float and soldered a brass float thinking the new cork was too heavy. No luck. The float moves approximately 3/16". I worked on it some myself today and had the tractor running for about 15 minutes. As soon as it was shut off, fuel started leaking from the vent tube of the carb. You will also notice I needed to place a piece of inner tube on the fuel inlet housing where the inlet screen is located. If I remove this from below the nut, fuel leaks badly here. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

There should be a gasket under that nut where the tube is. Like an oil plug gasket. Not following what u mean by fuel leaks badly here. Where ? At your thumb. Cause it has to leak there as that is the inlet. Is the float set level when the bowl fills with fuel. ? Float should be moving more than 3/16 “ is that the original needle and seat ?

Check to make sure the needle seat is correctly gasketed. Also the use of a spark plug gasket or copper crush ring under the inlet leak will work. Jim

Fuel leaks in multiple locations. One spot is above the fuel inlet housing where the nut is turned on. We have a copper washer there and it continued to leak until I place a homemade rubber washer from an innertube.(You can see it in the upper left part of the picture)

It also will leak into the intake manifold and through the vent tube. This is a float and needle valve issue. As I mentioned, various cork floats and a brass float have been tried. A new needle valve has also been installed as the old one had a groove wore in it as you mentioned. I do not think the float is perfectly level when lifted.

Jim,
We have a copper washer under the gas inlet housing nut and it still leaked until the homemade rubber washer was added. How do I check if the needle seat is correctly gasketed? It is a new needle valve...

It should come with a fibre gasket. Check the float level also that’s important. It must sit level when it rises up and closes the seat. Bend the tap to set it level.
