MF 165 Diesel PTO

Good evening. I recently purchased a 1975 MF 165 diesel and have a few questions about operating a few things.

How do I operate the PTO properly. I've put the lever down all the way and nothing happens but putting it back just a wee bit, I hear grinding and then it starts. This is being done with no implement on the shaft. When I hook up my snowblower driveline shaft onto the PTO and move the handle slightly backward, it grinds and doesn't want to kick on at all.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

In my reply to your post about this on the AGCO forum I asked if you were pushing the clutch pedal fully down. Please start by answering that question.

Oh ok, I missed that part. Apologies for that. I wasn't putting it fully down. I was just strictly using the lever.
It is most likely your 165 has a two-stage (aka dual) engine clutch. When you push the pedal about halfway down it disengages a clutch disc for the transmission (travel). Pushing it the rest of the way down disengages the disc that drives the PTO. This clutch arrangement allows stopping tractor travel while keeping the PTO running. That is called a "Live", or "Continuous" running PTO.

There is a "transmission" PTO, used in some tractors, I am not sure that option was available on the MF165 model. That PTO uses a single stage (single disc) engine clutch. With that arrangement when you push the clutch pedal enough to stop the travel, the PTO will stop.

The third type of PTO is an independent PTO. In that arrangement the PTO input is driven all the time, from splines built into the pressure plate (it has no PTO disc in the engine clutch as the two-stage clutch has) and it is disengaged with its own hydraulic clutch inside the transmission, controlled by the PTO lever. You don't need to use the foot clutch pedal to engage or disengage the PTO, and it is highly unlikely it would grind and not engage as you described, as it operates separately from the engine clutch.

Getting and studying the manual to get familiar with things about your tractor is the first step.

No transmission pto on a 165. It is either live or independent.
