MF-50 Diesel Air filter - somethings missing

The mechanic that rebuilt my grandpa's MF-50 for me said that the air filter was missing. He said that he couldn't get one so made one out of material that he said was intended for the purpose.

However, I found these after reading some posts here:
An inner filter: https://www.tractorpartsasap.com/air-filter-inner-new-baldwin-pa1809-p520511-121321.html
An outer filter: https://www.tractorpartsasap.com/air-filter-outer-new-allis-chalmers-237395-121320.html

I assume that these fit in the intake above the oil bath. Would either/ both of these work for my needs? If so, both together?

Thanks, Coyote

Those filters are for a tractor set up for dry paper element filters not for ones with the oil bath air filter as yours apparently has. What is odd is that the AGCO parts book doesn’t show an oil bath option, unless the “mechanic” did some “creative redesigning” We had a MF65 on the farm and it appears to have a lot of similarities to the 50. It had a gas engine and was equipped with an oil bath air filter. Look at the “air filter” section in the parts book I linked in your “fuel injection line” post.

Thanks for all of that!
I never looked down the air-intake as Papa had it covered with a homemade nest of window screen. Those ol' timers did with what they had.

Anyway, the mechanic showed me a wad of decomposed metal mesh that he pulled out of the intake pipe. It was so broken down that air was able to by-pass any filtering. I wonder if that is from the years that Dad used starter fluid to get it to crank. Well, the mechanic purchased something that he could roll up into the I.D. of the tube and set it in to replace the mess that came out.

I'll check the link- thanks for all the help. Merry Christmas.

The MF 50 Parts book only shows the dry air cleaner. Interestingly, my MF 50 Operator's Manual (1962 printing I believe) shows servicing the oil bath air cleaner, nothing for a dry air cleaner. If the mechanic refilled the air cleaner housing with some of the universal steel mesh for oil bath air cleaners it should be fine. The MF 35 parts book shows an oil bath air cleaner, but not the mesh in it as being replaceable.

For your air cleaner the air actually enters through the center pipe, goes down to the oil in the bottom cup (where most particles are caught), then travels up through the mesh (any oil drops out as it passes through the mesh), and out the side to the engine. You want to keep the cap on the inlet tube to shed water from entering the air tube and maintain the oil level to the level mark on the bottom oil cup.

Yes, that's what it looks like, except mine is under the hood with air intake through the front.
And, yes, the mechanic did use the universal steel mesh.
Getting your endorsement makes me feel better for what he did.
