MF175 power steering

The power steering on my 175 works, but it’s not very good. Plenty of fluid in the pump. I’m wondering if there’s a filter in the front in the canister that needs to be replaced. Or is there something else that’s causing it to be hard to steer and also I didn’t notice that one way is easier to steer than the other

It looks like a 175 could have used one of three different pumps. The Continental engine used one pump, it has a filter in it. Two different pumps were used on the Perkins engines, depending on the tractor serial number. One is supposed to have a screen in it and the other a filter element.

It could be the steering cylinder is due for a rebuild.

It’s the Perkins Diesel and it looks like there’s a filter element in a can right above the steering cylinder

Are you sure you are not looking at the hydraulic filter that is tied into the transmission/hydraulic oil? At least some have that filter and the oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator, and they are not part of the steering system. The steering systems have filters/screens in the power steering pumps as shown in the parts book I gave you a link to.

Do you have the manuals (operator's and service) you can check to see?

The hard steering and steering easier one way than the other is usually caused by wear in the linkage that actuates the valve on top of the slave cylinder. You might be able to adjust the linkage enough to cure the problem. If that doesn't work, the alternative is to drill the holes and fit larger pins, or braze the holes full and re-drill them.

My power steering pump looks nothing like the one in the manual. Looks more like this one IMG_8431.pngIMG_8431.png

I don't know what "manual" you are looking at, however there are 3 different pumps shown in the parts book I posted the link to.

Page 205 (use the index at the left of the page) is for the Continental engines; it is not anything like yours. You say you have a Perkins diesel engine, so you shouldn't be looking at that one for the Continental engines.

The power steering pump on page 201 is for the tractors serial number 9A 111877 and up, with a Perkins engine. It appears the pump body is somewhat oval like the one in the picture you posted.

The power steering pump on page 202 is for the tractor serial numbers prior to 9A 111877, with a Perkins engine. Its pump body appears to be more of a rectangle. There are several foot notes related to that pump at the bottom of the parts list. The last footnote (L) tells they used the pump on page 201 as the service replacement for the one on page 202. A couple lines had to change along with an O-ring to use the later pump. The info is in the footnotes.
