Hello to the group. I'm new here and must admit that I'm not a tractor guy. But my good friend Jake is. But as good as he is with tractors, he cannot turn on a computer so I'm his voice on the web.
I posted a similar request on the Case VAC FB group so my apologies if many here belong to that group and this is just a repeat of that request.

The tractor, SN 555846 needs a left band brake assembly. The internals pretty corroded and the springs and band (shoes) are missing. The tractor was purchased "restored" and the seller said it just needed a left brake rod. The owner brought it to Jake. Jake is 85 and was reluctant to dig into this one, but the owner is a friend who would not take no for an answer. Jake made a new brake rod and then when he went into the brake found the missing parts.

So, we are looking for at a minimum the band/shoes and prefer a complete left brake cover assembly for this 1951 VAC. I scoured the internet and could find disc brake parts and assemblies, but no band brake parts. I'm hoping someone here might be able to assist. Jake would like the entire cover due to the corrosion on the parts mounted in the existing cover.

I did do a search here and found a post from last year with some names of people who have Case parts. But there was no contact info. I will go back to that post, grab the names and see if I can find them on the web. But if someone has contact info, links, etc., to anyone who has Case VAC parts, I'd be very grateful.

Update: I talked to Saeli. No brake parts. He gave me phone numbers for 4 people with tractors that said they would sell parts. I called all 4 and only got thru to 1. He has a Case VAC and wants to sell it as a complete tractor if anyone is interested. He's in Fort Erie, Ontario. I will continue to try the other numbers. Don Livingston was the other name mentioned in that other thread it turns out I had sent an email to him at Rusty Acres. He replied today and sent me to the FB page, mentioned above.

Thanks,
Rob

Wengers in Myerstown, PA 717-866-8424 has some VAC brake parts. They part out tractors and more. I called them, they aren't sure if they have a complete assembly, but said they do have some parts. They are checking and calling me back. I'll edit this when they do. EDIT: Call and talk to Harry. He said they can get the brake bands new and also liners with rivets to repair your brake bands. Other parts would be hit or miss with availability.

Elmersrepair in Centralia, KS also parts out tractors. I tried to call them, but they don't open till 8:00 central time so didn't answer. They might have what you need. 785-857-3248

SP-9 combine uses these same brakes, can't remember if the SP-12 is the same or not. One cover has a bracket cast on it for a support on the combine. Don't know which side as the combine runs this rear end backwards. I suppose this could be cut off the cover. where are you located?

Mr Russell, you are going to make my buddy Jake's day. I'm going to call him right after I send this post. Thanks very much for the leads for parts.

While we are on the subject, I'd like to make a suggestion for the forum. Not sure you can make "stickies" or have another way to create threads that appear at the top of a sub-forum and stay there for everyone to reference. Other forums I am on can do this. My suggestion (new guys always think they know better, right? ;)) is to make a Parts Thread where sources for parts like you have just provided are easy to find. Combing thru old posts/threads does not always work as I'm sure you are aware.

Thanks again for the leads.

A reference list or stickies of where to find parts may work on some sites, however I very doubt that will happen here. PartsASAP is the parent company of Yesterday's Tractors. Do you know they not only sell new parts, but they operate several salvage yards as well? Links to some vendors get blocked. This site is a type of advertising for them. Most suggestions will pass if mentioned as DRussell did here, but I doubt they will make, or allow, stickies to give people contact info for other vendors for items they sell.

Excellent point. I guess the right place to put this would be in the VAC group on FB in the Files section. See, I knew the new guy idea would fall flat on it's face. :ROFLMAO:

Turns out that Wengers cannot get new bands. Can only get linings and rivets. So, we are back to the search for a left brake band. Jake did not call Elmer's when I saw him at dinner last night. I just called Elmer's and they never salvaged any Case letter tractors and they had no suggestions for who might have the parts.

Harry at Wengers told me specifically they could get both new bands and new linings and rivets. I wonder why the discrepancy.

Did you try Parts ASAP, the parent company of this forum?

I'd also try Messicks 877-260-3528, or messicks.com. They are our local CaseIH dealers, and have been very helpful for me at finding some old obsolete parts at times.

Well, Jake is pretty deaf and wears hearing aids. So I called them and spoke with Harry. He said that after he spoke with Jake, he had a better idea of the parts needed and Harry could not get them. In the conversation, Harry called the brake lining "banding" and he could have used that same term when he spoke with you. I confirmed that he could not get the actualy metal band that holds the lining. He did give Jake a contact for vintage Case parts.

I took the brakes off the sp9 a few years ago had a thought of putting them on my VAC. I’ll see if I can locate them in the morning. I’m in palmyra so not that far away. I’ll let you know.

I have a couple of 1949 VAC parts tractor so I may have a brake band

My guess would be that a 49 would have disc brakes. Tractors with SN before 5555000 have disc brakes. From that number forward, they are drum/band brakes. The tractor we are working on is SN 555846 and is a 1951. I would think that more than 846 tractors were made between 49 and 51. But that's a guess because all this is new to me.

Just to close the loop on this, we just got back from picking up a brake assembly for Jake's VAC. It came off a VAC 14 that was bought specifically for parts 20 years ago. The gentleman that owns the tractor is named Don Cary and is a member on the VAC FB group. He has 4 more VACs, several of which are in the process of being restored.

Thanks to all those who helped with suggestions, leads to dealers and especially to Klyde to actually had a brake assembly. The assembly we bought was only 45 minutes away.

Thanks and regards,
Rob

Glad you found what you needed. Now to hide them till someone else needs them.

We did find another brake assemby. Jake had called McFaddens and since it was a low dollar item, they were not very excited about going out to their junkyard to look. But apparently, someone found the incentive and called Jake yesterday and said that they had one for him.

I have no idea how many folks are interested in these old VAC tractors. I get the feeling that there are a lot more older version, with the disc brakes than the later versions with band/drum brakes. Or, it could be the drum brake tractors are still in operation and hence not getting parted out. I learned today that some had a worm type steering gear that wore out. That right there could put a tractor out of business and if that steering was on the older disc brake models that would also explain the easy of finding disc brake parts over drum brake parts.

Since I started on this quest last week, I found 4 left drum brake assemblies, 5 if you include the gent who thought he had one but it turned out to be a right side. Only one was with a dealer. I did find a possible with a guy selling parts in PA, but the picture he sent was a disc brake and he never answered any of my follow-up inquiries.

So, it is anybody's guess how much demand there are for these VAC parts. I guess if it were me, I'd pack them away so they won't deteriorate, and if I had room to store them and carry on with life. Staying in touch thru forums and similar groups would probably be sufficient. If you really wanted to sell the parts, I'd print up some cards on the computer and mail them or drop them off to Case dealers.

Thanks again for all the help.

regards,
Rob
