New help with starter removal.

I am trying to remove the started on a TO-20. It gets hung up on the Distributer. (1/8" interferrence between the starter end and the dist. clamp screw. See pic.

Any Ideas short of pulling the Dist.? I don't want to mess up the timing if I do not have to.

BTW for those who remember and the fewer who care. LOL. I believe now, as was pointed out that the drilled holes in the Dist. mount were for crank case breathing. I took the valve cover off and though the tube was clean the inside of the cover was 100% blocked up. It is now clean so I may have to pull the Dist. just to take care off the holes.

Thanks for the input,
Jeff

Jeff,
I just did this (on TO30). Have to take dist out. Do not loosen clamp but take out cap screw on left. First take cap off & mark where rotor points to so that you can put it right back where it was. Worked for me. Can't believe TO20 would be much diff. Good luck! KB

They have a positive drive Bendix and if the Bendix is in the extended or locked position then you have very little clearance. If you can bolt it back up and start the engine that will cause the Bendix to unlock and retract. Shut the engine off and you should have the room you need to remove starter. I have always been able to get them out even when they were locked by just moving them around and cussing a little.

Not a bendix issue. The nose cone is still in the hole.

I also talked to Paul Nelson.... He said the same thing on rmoving the distrib.

*$3&#% Engineers....

Alas, I"ll rebuild the dist. too.

Worked on neighbors TO-30 that was like that. I have several 30s and I have been able to get starter out on all mine with just some cussing and holding my mouth just right, but his was like yours. In his case the tractor needed a tuneup anyhow, so turning the distributor was not an issue. Not sure why some are so much trouble.
