Hello Everyone,

New member here, first post. I've been on the hunt for an older utility tractor for some time now, and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a nice 574 diesel. I had it narrowed down to a 574/JD 1520/Massey 150 and I think I've landed on the 574. I have an in law who has been a tractor mechanic at an implement dealer for 40yrs. He is a huge IH guy and says I won't regret grabbing the 574. This one doesn't have a bucket and never has, but maybe that is a good thing. What does set it apart is that it has a second mid level pto driving a big sickle mower blade. I have a pretty established food plot, but that might be a nice thing to have when it needs a trim or if I want to cut down a bedding field. There is also a box blade in back. In the future, I would be planning to find a 2250 loader to put on it. The unit has around 3500 hrs on it and is super clean, no rust, and with what looks like original paint.

My question is, I feel like I have looked at every 574 on earth that is for sale and some that aren't. I've never seen one with a belly driving implement before. Was this an actual super rare option, or is it something that someone used a kit to make up. The other end of this, is will having this second pto end up giving me fits with oddball problems and buyer's regret later?

Thanks for any insight or experience you could share!

Joe

Lot of state roadside mowers were mid mount. Later a lot of them were mid mount flail mowers. Tough as a rear mount PTO. Does it also have the 540 and 1000 rear PTO. May have been an industrial model but a lot of them were yellow. I have a red 454 set up this way and it is red but I see a lot of yellow on the Cat II 3 point and where grass rubbed the red paint off the underbelly. The 454 has the more industrial 1pc. 14 x 24" disc wheels like a backhoe or skip loader....James

Very popular tractor back in the day when there were a lot of dairy farms around here in mid Michigan with a loader. Still alot of them here used for general use. 574, 674 are the most popular our dealership sold back in the 70's and 80's. Mid mount pto was uncommon but there was a few around. Never heard any bad issue bout them

Does it truly have a "second midmount PTO" or is it just a jackshaft driven by the rear PTO under the belly of the tractor?

I'm not saying it's not possible but I've never seen an IH tractor with an integral belly PTO. That is the domain of the John Deere 10 and 20 series tractors. IH side mount mowers are usually driven by a jackshaft that runs under the tractor, or hydraulics.

If it truly has a mid mount PTO, your best defense is to prevent things from wrapping on the shaft and taking out the oil seal. So once you take the mower off, there is hopefully some kind of cap that goes over the protruding shaft.

Since the mower will get old real fast for removal to do other things. I would look for a separate tractor for a loader machine since the 2 combinations don't bode well together. A loader will get old removing it all the time to mow or do other things with the tractor. and I doubt the mower will be that handy to remove either. I would see the tractor as a mower tractor and a loader tractor as a loader tractor. Neither are as handy as they are made out to be for interchanging. As for the 574 it is not a very good loader tractor unless you have the auxiliary pump added to increase the oil flow for a loader .With a 12GPM and 3 prioritized for steering trans lubrication and brakes you only have 9 GPM to work a loader. We have got a 574 with that set up and it is painfully slow raising unless you wind up the throttle a good bit doing loader work. On the other hand the tractor has a good hydraulic pressure at 2500PSI. I would like to find the auxiliary pump for our 574 I have the mounting plate just no pump nor filter for it. Which is a separate unit inline of the oil flow to the separate pump. The Front axle is not such a whipee thing with the bolts that hold the knees to the main portion of the front axle they work loose and will break the bolts then we just put regular bolts in to hold the axle to the knees so they wont work back and forth in the main section. This is the swept back axle on our also. I think if it has the front axle like the 84 series does it would be fine since it is a more straight axle with a different set up on the knees to the main section.
