New to me 165 Massey gas, carb issues and questions

I bought this tractor non running. Went through all the electrical today to get a good spark, cleaned tank, sediment bowl. new fittings and gas line as most of this stuff was cobbled together. Ordered a carb kit and the carb on it has a Zenith bowl but says Bendix on the top part. The top and bottom are definitely different in color as the top is very shiney, bottom is normal drab color of pot metal. It will hit and run off of ether for a few seconds but not stay running on gas. Not sure if the carb is all correct or not, it was very clean inside, i left the adj needle in the bottom of the carb set where it was as they said it would run. Tractor has been running rich according to the plugs. Should i just buy a new carb? Is Zenith even the correct one for the tractor? Thanks for any help with this, it runs great, just need it to stay running.

Which engine? G176 or the AG4.212?
I dont know, i dont see a tag on it, the exhaust is on the right side sitting on the tractor but i dont see any other identifying marks other than casting numbers. I also looked on ebay and the carb i have looks exactly like whats listed on there so somebody probably bought a new one.

distributor is right front so its good to know what i have, i know some of the continentals they had issues with, is the perkins better or worse? parts ok to find? now that we know its a perkins is the carb the correct one or does it need something different, thanks for your help and insight into this.

Both gas engines can be hard to find parts for, if it was a Perkins diesel you would throw rocks at the gas engine..

I have a perkins diesel in a 230 and like it but this one came along cheap so im trying to get it reliable, any ideas on a carb or should i try to make the one i have work? is the Zenith what they came with? thanks for your insight.

The parts book says Zenith originally. MF part # 517678M92 appears to be a Zenith 13337.

What did you do when you rebuilt the carb. When you rebuilt the carb did you use tip cleaners or small wires to run in every passage along with carb cleaner and compressed air to blow them out?

Tip cleaners along with brake cleaner with the straw and then compressed air to make sure passages were clean. will reset float and try to get the main jet set for initial start once again and go from there. i do like the cast iron carbs like the marvel schebler better than the aluminum or potmetal ones. But will work with what i have for now. Thanks for your post and input.
