old tank heater

Years ago we had a heater that went in a stock tank to keep the water from freezing. It had a tank that held about 2-3 gallons of diesel fuel or used oil. You would get a fire going in the bottom of it and turn on the valve so the fuel would slowly drip and would keep a fire going to keep the ice off. It has since been destroyed by rust. Anybody know where one could be purchased? I would "google" it, but I don't even know what to type in to search. Thanks.

They were very hard to regulate. Seems like you either had a dead flame and burner full of oil and a skiff of ice on the tank or you had a roaring fire and a tank full of steaming water. A lot of cattlemen in the high plains region still use tanks in remote areas so I'll betcha an oil fired tank heater is still available. I'm trying to remember the name of the popular farm store out west but the feeble brain isn't sparking too well tonight (lol).

Just did a Google for 'oil burning stock tank heaters' and came up with almost nothing. All I found was a military surplus diesel fuel burning submersed tank heater that appears to heat a garbage can full of water. Jim

I have several that are propane fueled. They still work. The old fuel oil ones would suet up and then go out. Many a morning strip down to your bare arm/shoulder to reach down into freezing water to clean the heater out. Makes me cold just remembering.

The propane ones I have are Old LB white heaters. They don't make them any more. Trojan still makes them. I have attached a link.

or just google immersion heater or M67

I had forgot about them things.Could prolly put one or two to use myself.

We had one of those many years ago. The cattle knocked the tank off a couple times and the Diesel fuel mixed with the water. We butchered a nice steer and all of the meat tasted like Diesel fuel! We threw away all of the meat!

We went to an electric heater and threw the Diesel fuel heater in the scrap.

Best if you found another type heater than one of those. Even the old corn cob burner was safer than those and wouldn't contaminate the meat.
