Oliver 770 can't get PTO shaft back in

greghhh

New User
Hello all. I have an Oliver 770 and I took the long PTO shaft out with the PTO clutch. After fixing it, I am trying to put it back in and it goes in all the way except the last inch or so. It is the same shaft I took out that is going back in. Its feels like it is bumping something or the splines are not lining up. I can tell if its the splines half way up the shaft or the ones on the end. Is there a trick to get this shaft back in? Thanks.

One more thing.... While the PTO shaft was out, someone pushed the clutch pedal in just to feel it. Would this make the clutch disk drop a little making things not line up again?

No, that would not cause that to happen. The pto shaft goes through the hollow transmission input shaft and up to the flywheel. The clutch disk is kept in place by the input shaft.

Sometimes the bearings on the pto clutch assembly can be a tight fit when sliding it back into the housing

most likely it is hanging up on the hydraulic pump splines and when you turn it to line up it is also turning the pump even thou it is not engaged. try turning the shaft quickly and reinsert, may take some time but it will go in.

Thanks for the suggestions. What I ended up doing is unbolting and sliding the coupler between the bellhousing and transmission so I could look at the PTO shaft. Since the PTO shaft is then visible, I grabbed it and wiggled it some but that didn't help. So, I grabbed the outer driveshaft tube by the bellhousing, pushed the clutch foot pedal in, wiggled the outershaft that goes in the bellhousing and the PTO shaft went right in. I am assuming where the PTO shaft goes in must not have been quite in line. Either way, I seemed to get a lucky break. What a relief! Thanks again for your replies and willingness to help.

did you have the pto housing off? If you did you have to leave it a little loose and line it up with the rear end housing to get the bearing back in and once you get it back in then tighten the pto housing to the rear end housing.
