One row corn picker

The Le Sueur Pioneer Power swap meet is coming up and I'm looking for a one row corn picker that does a good job with husking. My IH PR-1 does a good job picking but only husks about half the ears. What should I be looking for ?

Maybe a different variety of corn. I had a variety of DeKalb one time that I couldn't get a single husk off of with my 325 New Idea. It broke off a lot of rubber fingers trying. That stuff was Hell on Earth to get back out of the crib.

I'd make sure the husking rolls & the rest of the bed are in good order before giving up on the 1-PR.

Otherwise, New Idea was the common picker around here for a long time. Most that didn't use NI pickers already had a combine. The mounted IH pickers were also common, along with the mounted offerings from NI.

I had some bT corn that I picked once that wouldn't husk, plus got a lot of stalk with the ears. The breeders haven't thought about corn pickers in a long, long time.

RH Shumway has a non-GMO hybrid called E-Z Pick 355 that I've grown that did well for yield and husked well. Getting it from Wisconsin to New Jersey got to be too expensive the last few years though.

Have you tried any of the other Shumway's varieties? Think the only one that didn't do well here was the Silver King, but we had an odd year & it might be worth a second try.

Have you looked into Hybrid 85? I can get a bag of that delivered to my doorstep for 1/2 of what they want per bag for the cheap stuff at Fleet & Farm. And I would still have to drive to get that.

I planted hybrid Goliath once, just on the 12 rows along the road and then gave it a little 'extra' N. Got some neighbors talking. It was hard to get all that stalk through the NI 324. I should try it again now that I have the Uni-picker with the JD corn head on it.

I'm growing OP corn for seed so I don't get to choose the variety. The rubber rollers in the husking bed are worn out and I see someone put a new (aftermarket ?) roller in years ago and installed it with the tapered end down. I wouldn't be opposed to fixing it if I could get new rollers.

If you're looking for a good one row, a 323 New Idea would be one of the last pickers built. Gotta believe you couldn't go wrong with one.

If you decide to go the New Idea 323 route, these guys have a lot of stuff not listed plus do snapping and husking roller rebuilds. https://www.countrymachinery.com/sh...=corn-picker-husker-corn-harvesting-corn-head I'd contact them to see if they can rebuild IH husking rolls if you want to try to fix the 1-PR.
This place also has New Idea 323 parts. If you do get a 323, forget the rubber fingers and put these on. https://abcgroffinc.com/ols/products/new-idea-update-for-husking-bed

I just saw one at an auction this past Friday. Don't recall the price. Anyways, the NI pickers have good parts support through the Mennonite community.
