Painting a tractor

Hi,
im in the middle of restoring a Ferguson TED20 and a Ferguson TEF20 and I’ll be painting them when it warms up a bit.
few questions:
1. With the injector pump, should I paint it or should I tidy and leave bare metal? I’ve seen both done. What’s the preferred way?

2.Chrome parts. Wheel nuts (arguably), gear knob, throttle lever, steering wheel nut and washer, pins etc. what should be done with them. Is there an easy and cheap way to chrome plate from home? Chrome spray paint? New? Paint fergie grey? what is the done thing?

3. tyres fitting. Paint before fitting tyres or paint after fitting new tyres. Hopefully fitting tyres myself so leaning towards fitting first?

4. Blue or chrome badge? mine was chrome but is untidy at the minute but I think it will tidy up.

5. How to get such a good finish on the bonnet? Do people completely skim with filler? Sand with a big block? What is your process including painting?

6. Where ia best to paint? I do not have access to a paint booth, I could make a temporary one, could use an old tent, could do it outside or in a dusty barn (last option). Im leaning towards building a temporary one with a heater and a box fan for some airflow.

7. 2 pack or enamel paint? what protection is required for 2 pack? Will a decent respirator work or does it need to be air fed?

8. Anything else I should think about or paint differently or not paint etc?
im not painting the oil fill cap. Im painting the starter motor and dynamo black and the radiator.

Sounds like a good plan so far. Prep and degreasing is #1. When I was restoring Ferguson’s I built a wood frame shed covered with clear plastic sheeting and a floor fan mounted to the rear wall blowing out with a large air conditioner filter on the intake side(opposite wall). Worked really well to do 3 painting jobs and then dismantled it. Still have the wood!

Single stage enamel. Add extra Hardner for, well, hardness + gloss. Do not need air feed- sissy stuff!. Wet down what may be dusty. Ground tractor- unless in UK, then Earth same. Hood- best rust free, primed, no dents + paint. Skim, whatever to cover sins/ cover laziness/ sloth.
 
Badge , originally chrome with a 'Duck Egg ' blue background infill . The Humbrol model paint range have little pots of Duck Egg but that is a perfect shade and quality of paint for the job . I also endorse the use of a hardener additive , 15 years on and my 1952 TED20 is still as glossy as the day it was painted . Like a car's paint finish , regular wax will help it stay nice .

C'est vrai que souvent on se pose la question : est-ce que je peint tout ou pas en gris ?
perso je n'aime pas " le tout peint genre sorti usine " peint entièrement ça protège bien tout les éléments du temps.
Après chacun son choix, aussi ce que l'on doit faire du tracteur peut influencer sur " tout peint ou pas "
Mon TEA20 COVENTRY est resté sans être repeint après sa restauration, couleur sous couche usine rouge orangé.
en voyant les tracteurs repeint ça m'a donné envie de le faire, mais pas trop neuf façon sortie usine.
Après hésitation, je suis décidé à lui donner une couche peinture pour faire plus net et paraitre moins " sortie de grange " je ne voulais pas non plus faire " trop neuf " seulement aspect propre et entretenu.
Ce n'est pas de la peinture de finition teinte Ferguson mais " peinture antirouille minium gris de chez JULIEN "
Elle ressemble beaucoup à la teinte grise des fergies elle est mate, mais en 2 canapés prend une légère brillance, genre satinée. J'ai laissé les accessoires alu et cuivre en l'état, le pot echappement et le collecteur peints en gris " fonte " résistant à la chaleur ( peinture pour poêle à bois ) Pour l'alu, passé un vernis incolore, laissé le capot dans sa couleur origine avec son décor blanc sur le dessus, je voulais laisser quelque chose -- d'avant --
Petite fantaisie couleur grise très claire sur le tour capot et devant de calandre. Me sers du tracteur pour le bois et la ballade, donc pas besoin qu'il soit fait comme neuf pour faire des expos.

My TEA20 COVENTRY remained without being repainted after its restoration, factory color orange-red undercoat.
seeing the tractors repainted made me want to do it, but not too new like it left the factory.
After hesitation, I decided to give it a coat of paint to make it neater and appear less "from a barn". I also didn't want to make it "too new" just look clean and maintained.
This is not Ferguson tint finish paint but “minimum gray anti-rust paint from JULIEN”
It looks a lot like the gray shade of Fergies, it is matte, but in 2 layers takes on a slight shine, like satin. I left the aluminum and copper accessories as is, the exhaust and the collector painted in heat-resistant "cast iron" gray (paint for wood stove) For the aluminum, applied a colorless varnish, left the hood in its original color with its white decoration on the top, I wanted to leave something -- from before --
Small fancy, very light gray color around the hood and front of the grille. I use the tractor for woodworking and hiking, so no need for it to be made like new to do exhibitions."
 
merci, j'aime la façon dont tu l'as fait, c'est bien rangé mais pas trop bien là où tu as peur de l'utiliser. Pour moi, je devrais soit le faire pleinement et faire un très bon travail, soit comme vous l'avez fait là où cela ne fait que redresser la situation. Je déteste l’apparence de la peinture gris foncé, plus brillante, lorsqu’elle vient d’être appliquée. Si la peinture présente une quelconque brillance, pour moi, il faut qu'elle soit bien préparée mais avec une finition mate ou satinée, on s'en sort avec quelques coups ici et là.
le vôtre est très beau dans la couleur gris clair mat.
Comme vous le dites, cela dépend de l'utilisation que vous faites du tracteur. J'ai 15 ans et j'ai 2 fergies que j'essaie de peindre correctement. Un à vendre et un à garder pour conduire quand j’aurai 16 ans et pour assister à des expositions. J'ai une boîte de liaison Fergie que je vais également faire pour aller à l'arrière, mais elle sera utilisée si j'ai besoin de transporter des journaux ou quoi que ce soit autour. Je vais juste faire plus attention et le recouvrir d'un tapis lorsque je l'utilise et l'enlever lorsqu'il n'est pas utilisé ou lors de spectacles. Quand je le vendrai, j'espère en tirer un profit décent et j'espère acheter un tracteur plus gros (70 chevaux) sur lequel je travaillerai sur une toupie, un petit taille-haie, etc. et je ne peindrai pas correctement, peut-être juste un travail de peinture comme vous l'avez fait. J'aimerais conclure un peu de contrat avec cela.
Tout dépend de l'usage que tu en fais


thankyou, I like the way you have done it, it’s tidy but not too tidy where you are afraid to use it. For me, I would have to either do it fully and do a really good job or as you have done it where it just tides it up. I hate the way the shinier darker grey paint looks when it’s just chucked on. If the paint has any sort of shine on, for me, it has to be properly prepared but with a matt or satin finish, you get away with a few dings here and there.
yours looks very good in the Matt light grey colour.
As you say, it depends what you use the tractor for. I am 15 and have 2 fergies both of which Im attempting to properly paint. One to sell and one to keep more for driving when I’m 16 and to take to shows. I have a Fergie link box which I am going to do up aswell to go on the back but it will be used if I need to cart logs or anything around. I’ll just take more care and line it with some carpet when I use it and take the carpet off when it’s not being used or at shows.when I sell the one, I will hopefully make a decent profit off it and I hope to buy a bigger tractor (70ish horsepower) which I will work on a topper, small hedge cutter etc and I will not paint properly, maybe just a paint job like you have done. Would like to do a bit of contracting with it.
