Yesterday I attended a farm retirement sale 16 miles southeast of me..It was the third sale I've been to this year where the temperature was in the low 40's with a north wind...Today at noon it was 33 degrees and we had 1/2 to 1 inch of snow...Our normal high is 70 this time of the year..

They tried to sell the 360 acre farm at 10 AM....Theres 335 acres tillable,10 acres of timber, and a 5 acre lake...There was a 1240 sq ft house, 40 by 60 machine shed,40 by 42 shop,and 22,000 bushels of grain storage..They tried to start at $4,000 per acre and dropped to $2,500 and no one would raise it....Several said that the owner wanted $3,600 per acre....A friend farms in this area and says that the soil is so-so and the rain often skips it..This land would cash rent for about $75-80 tops per acre..Those that think this is cheap haven't farmed in this area..

1-MM U tractor $2500

2-MM ZA tractor $2500-they sold choice on the MM's and the same guy took both..

3-560 Farmall gas $2600 and owner said no sale-wanted $3500-some of the crowd left then and more did later after more no sales

4-800 Ford $2,100

5-9700 Ford $6,400

6-2390 Case $6,500

7-7720 John Deere combine $5,500

8-JD 925 header $5,000 The header trailer sold for $2,025-They offered the combine together with header and no one bid

9-IH 900 8 row planter Started at $1,000 and no one would bid-seller wanted lots more.

10-Krause 22 ft disk $1,400

11-Case-IH 5400 15 ft no till drill Had a bid of $750-seller wanted $3,500

12-Case-IH 24 ft harrow $2,600

13-Allis Chalmers HG6 track loader with bucket-great under carriage but engine had bad crank-had a bid of $2,000 and seller wanted $3,000.

14-MM 3 bottom trail plow $125 The JD rotary hoe behind the plow sold for $200

15-IH fast hitch 3 bottom plow $300

16-IH 2x12 trail plow $150

17-Ford 3 bottom plow $140

18-No picture but a 1979 C-70 Chevy 10 wheeler with hoist and 550 bushel bed-Had a bid of $3,500 but seller wanted $5,000

All but 5 items sold but not letting them go hurt the sale....No one really expected the farm to sell ...I may not have made it clear the the 7720 JD combine, 25 ft
header,and the header trailer all sold...They just didn't stay together..

I'd sure like to find a no till drill for 3500$. Is the land dry farm?

Yes,its dry land but theres some irrigation not that far to the south....A few years ago that drill would have sold much better but these days its too small for most...

That's how all the equipment I use is it's all to small for about 99% of the farmers. Land isn't worth much without water Thats for sure we have some that the rain just will not hit it seems like.

Is the "hold back" done directly "in the open" by the owner so attendees know it's happening?

I guess I don't have the patience to stand around that type of auction anymore. When he started not selling stuff I would've packed up and went home. Just my opinion but it's not worth it to me.

Cylinder raises a lowers the back end of the plow like a 3pt hitch semi mount.

No, if you are familiar with fast hitch then you would know it does not work like that. Back end of the plow comes up with fast hitch.

I think it is hooked to the tail wheel to keep depth more constant.

Yes,the owner was up close to the auctioneer and told what he wanted for the items that he wouldn't let go....At least the seller was up front about it...I've been to more than one farm auction where several items didn't sell and no one knew it the day of the sale...Friends were there bidding them in..In fact that happened earlier this year at a sale I reported on..

The cylinder raises the tail wheel which helps support the weight of the plow when transporting...I have two IH 4 bottom fast hitch plows like that...We used to have a 3 bottom fast hitch IH plow with no tail wheel... The narrow front of our 460 Farmall was light when transporting down the road..It would get to bouncing..Usually its 4 and 5 bottom plows that you see the tail wheel on..

You could say the same about an AC snap coupler mounted plow. But they made them with a tail wheel. We had one. Neighbor did also. Had a one way cylinder back there. 3x14 behind a WD45.

The 9700 looks like it sat outside all its life and got the paint washed off so they just recently sprayed new on, but were too cheap to buy the stickers.

I spent a miserable afternoon 30 years plowing with a plow like that and a 560. My memory is poor but I think I had to lift the rear wheel to turn. I 'm sure I did plow like it was a semi-mount.It was for a friend and he was plowing with a 706 with a 3 point semi-mount.

IH called them a semi-mount plow but they really aren't a true semi- mount...The fast hitch prongs are rigid and don't pivot.....When you pick the plow up with the fast hitch arms its all coming up....The tail wheel is to help pick it up and give it stability when transporting....You mainly saw tail wheels on 4-5 bottom fast hitch IH plows used on narrow front 460's and 560's whom didn't have enough front end weight for a big plow..The 5 bottom plow pictured on the sales brochure could be used without the tail wheel lift but you'd better have a bunch of front weights on your 560..I have two 4 bottom IH fast hitch plows with tail wheel lift...One uses a hydraulic cylinder and a early one uses a chain to the fast hitch lift arms to help lift the rear.

A true semi-mount plow pivots on the 2 front lift arms..When you raise them only the front of the plow is coming up..The cylinder has to raise the rear...

I just went and looked at my two 4 bottom IH fast hitch plows with tail wheels and I'm partially wrong...The two fast hitch prongs pivot 4-5" against stops on them so they aren't totally locked in place.....However,you could still pick the entire plow off the ground without raising the tail wheel..

We went to the local Lions Club consignment sale Saturday,they sell everything from household junk to trucks and tractors. One of the auctioneers told the crowd(600 bid numbers)at the start,if you think your tractor-truck is going too cheep, buy it back, because we are selling everything.(and the club is getting the commission) Sounded fair to me.
