Plow hunt sucess! Now the two choices

Great Spirit,
Thank you for teaching me the lesson on patience and perseverance yet again. Can I get that with FedEx Next day shipping next time?

Have been prowling neighborhoods, back alleys, online, and auctions for decent two bottom plows.
For those that didn't totally follow the follow up to my endeavor, Had nearly bought one of 2 plows at the auction, just to see the person that outbid me aggressively post them to CL for twice the price. Can't blame a person for making a living in some legal form or fashion.

One was a very nice Dearborn 10-1 in red that was decent all the way around. Other a Ferguson that had very loose bearings, worn moldboards, and sheers that were pretty well chipped. It was in blue to match my Ford 3000, as my wife pointed out. Not exactly my top criteria, anything would have been better than nothing though. Just not worth the price auctioned for just to have to pay soo much to get fully right and make it last. Would have been almost or definitely cheaper to get new than the "Cute Blue Matching One".

After much sharing of those more knowledgeable than I, have been looking all over place. Had great luck. Twice!! Lightning does strike twice, just in 150 mile forks, LOL.

Start with second one, first. Was just off phone with person from local internet sale site and thought about calling the nice man bought tractor from in October. Didn't see him at Auction few weeks ago and was getting worried. My tractor friend and his wife both have had health issues and wanted to make sure was ok. So had wife break out his phone number (after programming in phone so as not have this trouble again) and rang him up. After few farmer minutes of catching up and making sure they were ok, subject came up of if we were in area for visit. Had to explain was about to get on road for look see at a double bottom plow was trying to get. He mentioned another friend had asked him about decent price for his Double bottom he was selling. Gave the wife a frozen look of shock, and said sure sounded like it and what kind of condition was it in? hmmm??? Got call back later that nite about more details and road trip #2 was scheduled.

For those that don't know, Marion county where I live is about Rhode Island/Delaware sized. People forget that if FL was straightened out, it would stretch from above Boston to FL/GA line. Living in the 5th largest county in FL has some unique elements to it. Am glad to have spent years driving over the road to prepare me for living here, LOL.

As was gathering trailer up to haul, that super nasty weather decided to rain on my parade to stop #1. Rain, Hail, and 37 tornadic celled thunderstorms later was bummed about not getting on road soon enough. Was definitely for the better though. Glad wasn't trying to drive in that mess. (Hope all went ok on your side Soundguy!!). One point half an inch fell on neighbors rain gauge in fifteen minutes. 3 1/2" total in four hour span made the evening interesting, to say the least. Tried to back the trailer under carport for morning departure in middle of that mess. Stood there and watched as "Non-Tornado" thunderstorm blew rain in complete 360 in matter of five minutes. Lakes on either side was only thing that saved that from becoming full blown F2, judging from velocity. Piled the animals up in house with me and just sulked about not getting my new toy yesterday. $50 at TSC for new hitch that was to long for receiver because some numbskull spot welded the inside of frame so old ball hitch wouldn't go too far in didn't help either.

Looked like this was going to be an interesting set of challenges. There usually is a reason. To keep the stock price for Prozac up maybe?

Let me start today with, I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON IN ANY FASHION OF THE WORD! Today, I hopped up at 6:30 after 3 short hours of sleep and had my coffee in peace, thankfully. One quick check of CL and another local internet site, and coffee in hand, lots of coffee, off I went. 40 miles west in grumble grumble snowbird filled bleep bleep morning traffic just to get to interstate. 75 miles south to my first stop and got there, in one piece this time, about when thought. 9:20a.m. and relaxing highway drive to my gleeful first stop. Mr. Frank already had plow on boom pole and yelled over engine noise to open gate for him. Obligingly bounding over to shoosh large black Hereford back so he could pass gate with my plow dangling by a wet rope. Seems he was trying to hurry and catch his wife who had already left horseback riding with daughter. Can't blame him, turned into a glorious morning in the mid 50's and plenty of sunshine! Was appreciative because had a full day ahead of me still. Got it chained down, a few cordial conversation bits while doing so and helped him get his tractor into the back pasture again. Man made it a point to show me his already western saddled 14year old horse with pride. Was a beauty! Mentioned I had some riding left to do myself, unless he wanted to trade of course, and bounded off with a new spring in my step. 15 miles back to highway with one quick stop to recheck chains. 90 miles back up to the farm on NW side of Ocala, and was glad to get it to its new home. Donna (the tractor, another long story, not my wife, same name) warmed up after few minutes and got the plow settled behind Shed for time being.

Almost Noon already and lots left to do. Ran the 35 miles back to East side of Ocala and gassed back up, fed the empty hole in my belly, hit the ATM for more plow money, stopped at house 25 miles east and walked dogs and topped off coffee. Whew, am thinking cat nap with three cats on toasty sunny bed sounds nice right about now. Gotta get trucking though. Called my Tractor Friend and let him know ETA, and scooted on down the road.

45 miles through the Ocala National forest on a beautiful day isn't a bad way to spend the day. At all! Got over and went to his friends farm and took a look at Plow #2. Said yeah, worth the price. Couple of his guys there grabbed up the JD and loaded her up. Chained up again, got different directions back towards my neck of woods and cruised back. Had a nice little think about many blessings. You bunch included.

About the middle of Forest a little piece of Irony hit me.
For almost same price as one plow at fairly good auction price, now had two. Irony was, Dearborn plow (#1) was blue this time and in better shape and had all the attachments, curlers included. Ferguson plow (#2) was rusted but red. Complete opposite colors from auction. At least it matched my tractor! LOL.

Made stop on edge of town again to meet wife between her jobs to share with her the irony, and see what had been up to. Already has my work schedule for turning her veggie garden etc. Sheesh. At least she smiled about the treasures. Another 40 miles NW of town to the farm and caught up with neighbor borrowed trailer from. 5p.m. and what a day. Made some plans to get wire cable out from bush hog so we could get his 3-4 acres mowed before I plowed for him. More on the calendar! Piling up already and still haven't gotten the thing hooked up yet., let alone my acre and a half turned. All great, that's what friends and neighbors are for. We trade a lot of things back and forth. It always finds a way to increase the Karma quotient. Then he let me in on his secret field planting buddy. Now not so rushed to find a set of discs to get field ready, planter, etc. Can afford to get help this time around now and get this started in right direction.

Have to just smile and appreciate the events. Tired and well worth the last hour and half drive back home after stop to trade vehicles back out with wife.

So after all that no pictures? HA! you say?

Dearborn 10-1 (blue like da tractor!)

Something about this serial number I like. Not sure when was built, just know Mr.Frank had it longer than I have been alive, he thinks.

I believe these are the curling tips? Not exactly sure what are called, just know they are rare to find complete like this.

This one is not quite of nice shape. Going to take some work to get right.

While loading, one of the shears fell off and showed a slight minor type problem, I think.

Shows where piece of the moldboard came off with the sheer. Not knowledgeable enough to know if means am going to have to replace moldboard also. My Tractor friend has several sheers buried in his garage he is going to dig out for me. Shouldn't be much of problem getting that part covered. My welding skills and experienced is very limited, but probably get my auto mechanics to do for me if need be.

Opinions and advice are definitely welcome here. I know both need to be cleaned a bit, and greased before storing away when done. Any tips on good sources for parts would be appreciated.

While on subject, what the heck is proper way to measure these puppies? Where to get 12"-14"16" figure from? Little tired after day, do enjoy the mostly non blurry photos and let me know how you think I did? (Gas and time not included, worth that just to spend time with good people was worth it!)

The first one will require much more money than it is worth to make it serviceable. I would pay no more than scrap price.

The second one is more complete and may be serviceable as is. Cannot determine the wear condition of the moldboards and shares from the photos but they appear to be serviceable. Probably worth around $250 in my area. $300 tops.

The curved accessories are called cover boards.

The Deerborn looks real good. My neck of the woods about 350-400. The other up here would bring 150-250.

I paid 300 for my Deerborn and still feel like I did OK. Got both the cultivator and plow as a package deal for 600. Most of the time around here the cultivator is worth 400.

Well, I own them both. Like I stated above, got both for about one went for at auction. Scrap price is about right for the Ferguson. Just was wondering if worth fixing and about how much the damage to the moldboard affects that.

The Dearborn am ecstatic about. My original concern was about no shear pin, just have to be slow and steady careful.

Am learning about local price ranges and searching for more, like cultivator and discs, etc. Slowly will come.

Sweet deal there Oldmax. Thought I had reasonable good luck on my pair.

Had to update things while at it.

Measured out the Ferguson, and indeed was a 14". Will have to replace at least one moldboard by looks of, probably better to do both while at it.

Much to my surprise, the Dearborn was a better deal than thought. My lying eyes said thought it looked a tad bigger, and sure enough, was. Turns out to be a 16" Dearborn 10-1. Very pleasant bonus to have next size up than thought. This one has some life left in the shares(sheers?), so will put to use very soon. Pics will be coming forth.

Hoping everyone does well in coming storms/front. Stay warm! Will enjoy my 80 degree day tomorrow if can. Am off work, so plenty of farm time to get rest of fence down around Chicken coup (no chickens yet) and mama's small garden so can plow with rest soon.

Mine was missing colters and Ferrer wheel. but for the price can't gripe much. just added about 6" to landslide a heel on second plow, haven't tried yet. thought that might make up for wheel.
