question for John Saeli

@John Saeli on another site there is a fellow asking about a 930 and 1030 sharing rearends, my memory says the 1030 has heavier internals and the brakes are different as well but I was wanting confirmation, they look the same externally basically but like I say I thought the 10's were built heavier? any help would be great! Thanks John

Everything, including the brakes on the 8sp 930 and 1030 are the same. Some of the part numbers in the books are different from1 book to the other, but when I sub them, they go to the same number, such as the Ring & Pinion.

Ok, thank you, I wasn't sure but thought I'd been told 10's had bigger ring and pinion and different brake design but that was not true! I would wager to guess then that it is basically the same rearend as 970, 1070, and maybe 1170 eight speed?

There are differences with age, for instance the 1030 got an updated pinion shaft on later models because the nut in front would fail, but they may have updated the 930 then too. I've been told the later models got different gearing, my 1030 is late and 3rd gear is faster than the 930 I had. But again that may have been done in the 930 too. The 1030 also has the oil cooler for the transmission and a different transmission filter system. The tin on a 1030 is the same as the 930 6spd.

The rear bearing on the pinion shaft is bigger on 1070s than on 970s. I don't know about 30 series.
