I recommend you check to verify the the linkage from the governor to the carb move freely and don't bind. With throttle lever in the idle position, engine not running, you should be able to lift the link going to the carb with no resistance to full throttle. The link should freely fall back to the idle position when released.

Also look for excessive worn parts. Some had a small pin in the arm. I have had issues there. I have had some issues with mine over the years. Used to be easy to get a whole governor if need be.

SW Molines thank you. That linkage is likely the problem. It moves up and down, but has lots of resistance both ways. I haven't tried freeing it up, but will soon. An MM U at the same place (Farmamerica) has that linkage totally free and moves just as you said. Ron

If I remember correctly I thought in an MM operators manual I read it states you can loosen the 4 bolts for the governor and turn it to get free movement on the linkage.

I took the bottom plate off and the inside is pretty rusty and dirty looking. I sprayed penetrant in there and tapped gently where the shafts are. No really noticeable difference in the stiff movement.

Can the governor unit be removed by taking off the necessary linkage and the 4 bolts holding it to the engine? My concern is will anything "fall out of place" and be impossible to get back together without working inside the crankcase? Reason for asking is I've never worked on one of these governors

Thanks for your information.

Yes, just unhook the linkage and remove the 4 bolts and take out. You may have to gently bump it a little to get it out of the bore. The other end has a gear that meshes on the camshaft.

Well, before "pulling" the governor, I decided to check the carb valve and sure enough, that is sticking big time. So the carb needs to come off and be worked on - cleaned and freed up. Thanks for the help from you MM folks.

Where can I find a new or good used throttle rod for this TSX 36 Marvel Schebler carb? The old one is definitely bent just enougn to cause it to bind.

I checked Steiner's and their website doesn't list a kit WITH throttle rod. Steiner does have kits but not one for a TSX 36. Thanks.

Try carb places like Roberts, Treadwell etc. Also look on line find a used parts carb.

55 50 Ron, I am thinking the part you need is the throttle shaft for your R carburetor, right? I am thinking that a carburetor like for a Ford 8n will be the same size as an R carburetor, with the exception that you will have to take the arm-the external lever on the end of your R throttle shaft- off of your old shaft and attach itto the new Ford shaft in the same angle orientation to the flat area of the shaft where the throttle plate goes. I saw an old-timer do this to a throttle shaft back in the '90s. He brazed the arm to the shaft. Ford carb. kits are much more plentiful and much more likely to have a throttle shaft included than a kit for a MM.

I have also heard of people making an entire new shaft from a brass rod, filed flat where the throttle plate attached. And of course, drilled and tapped to mount the throttle plate. Of course you still have to re-use your old lever off the end of your old throttle shaft.

You are correct in your thinking and thank you.
