Red Cub Cadet

A friend of mine was given this LGT for free.
He has it running now. I think he said it was about a 12HP Kohler.
It has the mower deck that comes with it.
I had never seen a Red Cub before - or even heard of one.
I haven't seen it. He just sent me these photos.
Are they common? What's it worth? He has no use for it.
I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this.
Would the LGT forum be better? Or some other site?
Thanks for any info.

From 1979 until 1981 these red Cub Cadets were built at the IH plant in Louisville. IH then sold the Cub Cadet line to MTD and they continued this model until the mid-80's. These were good, solid garden tractors. The 782 would have originally had a 17 hp 2-cyl Kohler with a hydrostatic drive. IF it runs good, the hydro is strong, and the deck is in decent shape I'd think it could be worth $500. Although it is fairly old, garden tractors of this vintage were built tough and will keep going long after today's throw-away machines end up in the scrap yard.

There is a Garden Tractor forum here on YT that you might want to post this question on as well.

Word from garden tractor guys is the red CC were sold at farm tractor dealers, yellow and white were sold only and lawn mower dealers. I have one, still use it weekly.

The original 782s came from the factory with a Kohler series I 17HP engine. Many of those engines failed because they were not pressure lubricated engines. Mowing on a side hill often resulted in the engine being starved of oil. If the air cleaner now reads series II it would be a 17hp engine with an oil pump. If the engine has been replaced with a series II engine, and assuming it runs well, the value might be closer to $1,000.
