Replacing Farmall A Steering box

Going to get this tractor from a friend. He supposedly has the correct part to replace the broken steering box.

Can we do this job where it sits with just regular tools and maybe some heat? Anything special I should be aware of? We can lift the tractor safely if need be and secure it.

Also, can you tell from looking at the part if it's the correct one for this tractor?

Thanks in advance,

Gerrit

The entire front end of the tractor needs to be removed back to the engine to replace that casting. Hood, grille, radiator, front axle.... It's not a huge job but it's not a small job either. If you have a place to move the tractor where it will be on stable concrete, you might want to consider doing that.

Looks like the right part. Good luck doing it where it sits. Like Barnyard said,
everything on the front of the engine needs to come off. If your going to get it
running again, which I presume you are, I would replace the crankshaft seal while your
right there.

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning more towards just loading it up and dealing with it at home now. It's a give-away tractor and my friend has enough projects for a few lifetimes so we don't need to be spending a lot of time on this. It'll have "yard art" duty at the end of my driveway, no plans to get it running anytime soon--if ever.

Damage came from it rolling down a hill and encountering a tree.

Thanks for the helpful advice.

Hard to tell from the pictures but maybe it still will steer if freed up some. Looks like all the gears are still there?? surprising how stuff really gets solid with rust and sometimes a little Pent. Oil will
free it up??Cleddy

one of the replys says that the front axle needs to come off. that being the case.. you will need 2 people, some lifting power and so forth. get it to a shop of some kind and be very careful. is there anyone near that has mechanic experience, that would be a plus.
