Roll-over plow questions

I'm considering trying to find a roll over plow to use with my deere 4020. My first and main question is are wear parts still available for them, the left and right hand shares shins and moldboards? If so who or where do you buy from? My last question is more looking for opinions or input, what size 3 or 4 bottom should I be looking for? In my area most used 4x16 semi mounts moldboard plows back in the day but I had read once that with a roll-over it was best to go one bottom smaller than a one way plow.
Thanks for any help or input

A 4020 needs a 3x16. Yes,they do pull 'harder'Usually due to the wet packed dirt of irrigation. And most guys run rollovers deeper than the oneways. and are heavy. You are going to need front end weight. Yes,wear parts are available,as rollovers are common and regularly used in furrow irrigated country.See your implement dealer. Here in irrigated western Colorado, the Coops,Farm supply stores as well as implement dealers sell parts. Weiss and Adams are two manufacturers. In my opinion,IH,Masseys are best, with Oliver and then JohnDeere.JD is discontinueing moldboard plows so parts mey be an issue in the future. JDs also seem to pull harder than IH or Massey.Stay away from Allis Chaalmers and Case as parts are NLA.I have Several IH rollovers. #314(3x14) and a 642(4x16),and others.IMHO,the IH plow is the best. They are still made today by the Artsway company. And they have kept the same frog/share/shins/landsides since the early '60s.14/16/18" share use the same 4 bolt pattern too.

I have 3-16" and 4-16" Oliver rollovers. I pull the 3 bottom with a 3020 P.S, hfwa. Pulls it easily but a lot of rear end weight. I pull a 4-18" 1350/1450 JD semi-mount with the 3020 in sandy river bottom ground. I can not use the 4-16" rollover on the 4020, too heavy and I had hfwa and a full set of front weights. I pulled it with a 4240 P.S and hfwa and a full set of the heavy suitcase weights. I pulled a 5-16" 1450 JD semi-mount plow with the 4020, 5-18" with the 4240. I got Adams parts at a farm supply store in Albany Oregon but my JD dealer had normal wear parts for it too but I hear it is hard to find left hand moldboards for Oliver rollovers. The newer IH rollover plow I demo'ed back in the day was heavier and it is coupled further back than my Oliver so it put even more weight on the tractor....James

The 'correct' plow for a 4020 was the 835 two way rollover. It was made the same time frame as your tractor, discontinued in 1971. Available in 2;3;or 4 bottoms. It used a hydralic motor to roll the plow over. However,a lot of those have been put on newer, higher pressure tractors and have the internl seals blown out. AFIK,they are still availabe, and are not hard to change. 'Consumables' are available. Aftermarket is easily available. They were a decent plow, but I always thought they pulled a bit harder, and didnt do quite as nice a job as the IH.A 3x16 would be a perfect match for a 4020.I bought a 835 (4x16) when I bought my 1256 in 2000. .It did just fine, but after 3-4 years I trad
ed it for an IH 642. Still have that plow.If I were to 'upgrade', I would simply go to a newer IH plow,a 140 or 145.Good luck on your plow search. Look into the furrow irrigated aresa where they are common.

Thanks for the information. I've seen an oliver 3x16 I think it's a 6341 model and a couple IH either 140 or 145 plows a few hours away from where I live. The only problem with the IH plows is they are 4 bottom and the fourth bottom is not the style that the support beam unbolts between the 3rd and 4th bottom. The person who posted below says the oliver plows left hand wear parts are getting hard to find. Thanks again, half the fun or battle haha is finding the right piece of equipment and parts to get it fixed up.

Thanks for the response. Kind of stinks about the oliver parts getting hard to find, there is a 3x16 oliver I believe model 6341 a few hours away from where I live. Not to many rollover plows in the midwest, I've always thought they were neat and probably made plowing a bit easy not having to strike out multiple lands. I've always got my oliver 4x16 semi mount plow I can use until I find a rollover. Thanks again!

According to JD F835/F845 specifications a 4020 should be able to pull a 3 or 4 bottom roll-over. I fully realize type of soil & plowing depth have a direct bearing on number/width of bottoms. If looking for a JD moldboard I'd look for a F845 to have spring trip standards vs shear pin standards on the F835. I'd personally rather have a Massey Ferguson, Oliver or IHC plow. There's a person on the internet that handles plow bottom parts but his name eludes me at this time. Maybe it's Tim the plowman??

I have one. JD I think. It was a 4 and too heavy for the 4020. I made it 3 but I simply don't use it. I think it's got good steel on it. Where are you at?

Wiese still lists an R419-16L Oliver/White 16" left hand moldboard.
