I'm installing a new seal #D6NN7R240B in my Ford 850
TRANS. MAIN SHAFT OUTPUT GEAR RETAINER
what side do i need to seal tran. or pto side

I've been waiting for experience to pipe in but I will offer this:
I have not done this, but looking at this link to the parts diagram it appears the lip faces the retainer housing away from the bearing.

An easy was to remember (in my opinion) is the lip always goes to the side where you want to contain something.
Same on hydraulic cylinder rods, lip goes out to help keep contaminates out.

You're correct, but in this case, which way do we go? We're trying to keep the transmission oil out of the rear axle, and
vice-versa.

I looked in the manual and didn't see any guidance. Myself, I would point the lip towards the transmission.

It's a double lip seal. I don't think
it matters.
