Short haul equipment hauling - Fair hourly rate

You can only charge what the customer is willing to pay, if that isn't enough to you, then do not take the job.
That is backwards in my way of thinking, whether for trucking or hiring your self and gear out to do work in general.

You figure your operating cost and profit level as you chose and set a price, by the mile , by the trip, or by the hour, your choice. The customer can decide if he wants to pay your price to have you do it or if he wants to look for someone else to do it for him.

I think we are saying the same thing, just wording it differently.

Maybe this is not what you meant. When you say one can only charge what the customer is willing to pay, to me that means I have to decide to do it at his price, or not do it for him. I read what you posted as the customer is dictating the price to be paid for the service. I am saying I set my price, and the customer decides to use my service or not, for my asking price, not his price.

I agree with you. Last year I bought a 9-10K lb tractor 2 hrs away, mostly all expressway driving. When I was looking for someone to haul it for me, the prices were crazy. It seemed like anyone with a truck and trailer big enough to haul it wanted to make thier monthly truck & trailer payment and a little extra from the 4 hour job. I decided to just buy a good used deck over and I hauled it myself for not much more money. Since then I've used it hauling balage and other things that I would have paid someone else to do and its more than paid for itself. I can now eliminate hiring out trucking. I think some guys with trucks and trailers tend to overestimate what the jobs are worth.

So are you supposed to charge enough to replace the transmission if it fails
Yes, that's not for just one haul though. You should be paying into a maintenance saving account so when that transmission fails you have the money back to pay for everything involved with making your truck usable again.

The problem is most want to be paid from the time they leave their house to the time they get back home.
IE. I want you to haul my tractor 300 miles so you charge me for 600 miles. There and back.
So let me say you would never make it the real world where you depend on your truck for your living. It is not my fault you can’t find a paying job for the return trip home.

Maintenance and replacement is a prorated thing if the truck will last for 150,000 then you would figure so the cost of the truck would be replaced in that time and the same for the trailer as well. Any repairs like the rearend or transmission or a trailer axle and such. Oil changes are also part of that cost. Tires would be figured as such also but you need to have the cash for a blow out and that is not usually figured in as a maintenance item but as a contingency item since it got damaged and ruined before it wore out. Most don't figure all those things into the cost of trucking and then wonder why they are not able to replace tires or oil changes as needed. This also applies to the chains straps and binders for the tie downs.

I just ordered a new gooseneck lowboy. 5 to 6 week delivery. I was told they would deliver it to my door for $440.00. It is 160 miles. That figures out to be $2.75 per mile. I will probably go get it myself. $100.00 worth of fuel and a nice little day trip to a place I have never been.

I know you don't want a sermon on do's and don't. $55 per hr. It's a simple formula 1/3 for fuel 1/3 for the truck , tires insurance, etc. 1/3 for you. So I figured if fuel costs $100 then I got $100 and the truck got $100. I never took a haul if it never paid this much. And I ran under my own authority, and never went broke.

Have a 3/4 ton pick up and 18' tilt bed trailer. Helped neighbor out a few times hauling tractors from a local auction.
Never charged him as we help eachother. Now his neighbors and friends calling me to transport their equipment.
All local so $ per mile would not work. What is a fair hourly rate to provide this service?
I would charge from the time I leave home until the time I got back.
Look online for Depot's rental stores, they used to have a delivery fee posted, but recently I noticed the website says contact store for delivery/pickup charges....I would t charge any less...the cost of your truck and trailer replacement multiplies everyday
