Special tool to remove a 730 pinion gear?

One of my sons' friends has an early 730 that needs a pinion gear. He can't get the nut off the pinion gear and says the book calls for special case tools to get it apart. Does anyone have the special tools or a picture of them so I can try to help the kid before he scraps the tractor?

I haven't seen it personally, but if I can make the tools in my shop to help him out, I would like to do so.

IIRC, the 730 used a nut that had 4 holes drilled into it and a socket made with 4 pins sticking out to engage the holes in the face of the nut, the nut had no flats. that is the inner nut that pulls the countershaft gears together, it is locked by a roll pin driven into one of the holes and into a hole in the front gear, just drive the pin in and it will allow the nut to be turned, I do not recall any special procedure for the main shaft nut. My above explanation is applicable only after the first nut and bearing are removed so pics would be helpful if you could get some so we know where he is at in the process, he really could use a service manual as they step by step you through it.

Here's what the

parts and service manuals show.

Must apologize for my response, when you said Pinion gear my mind went to the ring and pinion which is the countershaft and the procedure for that removal is what I described. you are picturing removing the bull gears on the axle shafts which is a relatively straight forward process, keep us posted

Mel, I was looking for help with the Pinion, as in ring and pinion. the axles/bull gear, ring gear are out, I explained how to use an air hammer on a big nut like that.

I talked him through it your info, but it might be a moot point anyway as he is frustrated and potentially sold the engine out of the tractor.

Mel, I believe you were right and the bull gears I posted are not what he's asking about. The service manual does say the ring and pinion gears are a matched set and should be replaced accordingly. It does not show taking any nut off the pinion.

The area I was referring to is the front of the matching ring and pinion, I guess we will have to see how it turns out if he is scrapping the unit. Will watch and see.
