Starter issues

I am having starter issues with my Massey pony. The solenoid was bad and the bendix was broken. I put both on and it just spins. Doesn’t engage. It is switched to 12volts and I cleaned up all the connections and ground. Battery and cables are new. I am a rookie starter rebuilder but have done other motors. Is there a bendix adjustment? I believe it is an autolite 4146a starter.

wow your being mean to that poor 6 volt starter bendix. they dont really like 12 volt. and it will break again. and that's such a small engine , have you bench tested it to see if the bendix flys out ?

Your "inertial" starter drive will only "fly out" if the starter is turning in the correct direction that matches the intended rotation of the specific replacement starter drive you have.

IF you had the brush end of the starter off on SOME starters it's possible to muck things up there so the starter runs backwards OR your new "drive" MAY be made for starters with the opposite rotation, or simply be defective

It’s brand new out of the box so it seemed to have a coating of oil on it. This is how I bought the tractor and it was one of those running when parked deals that is nickel and diming me right now! It seems to spin very fast but the bendix doesnt come out

that I need to check. I did see the bendix is the same direction but I did have the brushes out when I cleaned everything up.

Not saying it can’t happen, is the back bearing plate/brush holder (not 100 percent on the configuration of an Autolite starter)pinned so it can only be installed clocked in one spot? If so not to likely it could be reversed.

To lessen the impact to the drive in the starter use a smaller cable for the hot. Like only a 4 gauge wire. Less amps and less impact to the drive. Since it should not be running fro only a couple seconds it is not going to get hot or cause a problem.

I’ve used plenty of 6 volt starters at 12 volts never had a problem. While it can be tough on starter drives I’ve used smaller batteries and/or light gauge cables to soften that blow.

As far as the Benfix drive not coming out at 12 volts, it actually should spin out even more aggressive so i don’t think the 6/12 change alone is the problem.

It’s not hard on the bench to insure it’s turning the right direction so check that out in case, but if it has any indexed brush mount end plate allowing for reversal that’s a possibility. If turning the wrong direction the Bendix wants to stay back in not come out

Time for a bench test and direction check but if you only replaced brushes and didn’t turn or modify the plate and holder that shouldn’t cause reversal. I guess it could be the wrong bendix but that seems rare

Let us know what you find

Sorry to hear that ,Take the starter to a local Auto electric shop and have it converted to 12 volt. Be about 200 to 300 .Parts counter man’s delight . Easy money they say .
Typically with 12 volt conversion and 6 volt starter .

Quick follow up! Problem is solved! After taking a step back and reading all the responses I checked the starter and it was turning backwards! Turned the brushes 90 degrees and now everything works! Now on to the ignition system! Thanks for all the replies!

If 12 volts doesn't hurt 6 volt starters, why do 12 volt starters exist? They crank so much better than 12 on 12.
6 volt starters have heavier internal wiring because it takes double the amperage to turn compared to 12 volt. 12 volt can be made cheaper with lighter internal wiring. On all of our 6 volt starters running on 12 volts I've replaced exactly 1 throw out spring since about 1978.
