Hello all. My pre-1965 4000 series (4140) diesel tractor needed a new starter solenoid. I went to a couple of places to buy one, and they both had solenoids that were identical in appearance to the old one. However, on backs of the packages, they were labeled as being made for tractors made in 1965 and later. I bought one and installed it, because they had nothing else. The new solenoid did nothing when wired in as the old one was. Thinking I might have somehow crossed the small-gauge wires that are pushed on to the two lugs, I reversed them and turned the ignition key again. Not only did the solenoid operate, but the engine started to turn over, even though I had not yet touched the starter button on the transmission. The tractor then started, and I had to turn the ignition key to the "off" position to disengage the starter. As expected, the engine continued to run until I throttled it all the way down. I could use it this way, but I recognize that there is an element of danger in having the starter button on the transmission bypassed, as it is now. I would like to have the starter button back in the loop.
My question: Do I have the right solenoid, wired wrong, or do I have the wrong solenoid?
