Starter won't engage, Not what I expected

Using my 8N moving firewood, had the box loaded and hit the starter and all I hear is the starter motor spin. I figured it was the starter drive, new design I installed a couple of years ago. Not happy had to walk back to the shop, load tools in the Jeep and go back and pull the starter. Got the starter in the shop for a better look as the drive looked OK. When I spun it by hand the shaft that the drive rides on moved in and out of the starter a lot. Took the nuts off of the through bolts that I put on so the starter wouldn't come apart and the armature shaft had snapped.
Local parts house fixed me up and tractor is back in action. All of my local starter alternator shops have closed so I'll have to take it with me when I go out of town as it's a ride to get to the next closest. Probably never need it but it would be nice to have on the shelf.

Probably cheaper to buy a new or rebuikt starter.

by some chance has the battery been changed to 12v and the starter is still 6v? if so that is probably the cause
12 Volts is harder on them but some of the tractors Dad had (sorry no Fords) used the original 6 Volt starters after 12 Volt conversion and lived a long time.

It's been 12 volt for the 37 years I've owned it, no idea how long before that. Only thing done to the starter since I've owned is was 2 starter drives.

absolutely nothing wrong with 12v, it just puts at least double torque on 6 volt system , EI , try it on 6v lights
I have not given it much thought but OTTOMH I dont think the torque needed to spin the engine changes with voltage😀

The torque (motor load) stays the same but the motor RPM at that load increases.

I too use 6v starters with 12v and have for ~60+ years just fine, but my ears sure tell me that they slam that bendix harder.
