as I said the other day I would post my 9n's story so here it is:
The story of my 39 9N with 8N engine. So it starts the day I went with my mom and stepdad (i’m 15) to their buddies place, we were chatting around when the buddy (i’ll call him Bert) asked me “what's the oldest tractor you drove?” I said the oldest I drove was a 1945 WC that my great grandpa owns. He said well this ones a 52 and points at what I assumed was an 8N. It had custom hood sides that didn't fit right, a custom bumper bolted to the hood side brackets on the radiator and it was all white with a red engine and a 12 volt conversion as well as a broken three point hitch that wouldn't lift. He asked if I wanted to drive it, I said sure I wanna drive it. The battery was old and not working so he had to jump it but it fired right up. So i went for a drive around, I tried to give the old tractor a little throttle, 3 notches into throttle *boom, loud backfire. No good I said, it wont run good. Eventually I had to park it and we went home shortly after. A few weeks go by and we go to Berts house in town now. He says he's selling that tractor for 1200$ to anybody but because he saw I liked the tractor and that i'm younger i could buy it for 500$. I jumped at the opportunity and arranged the purchase. One month later we headed out there to get it. We got there and it's already running but almost out of fuel, we brought gas for it and fueled it up. That's when he said “that's the first tank of gas it had in the 2 years I've owned it”. Yikes I said to myself, no wonder it wouldn't run nice. So we then set off 20 km to home from his place in -16c weather. It was cold but we eventually made it. The next day was the first things we did. We changed the battery as none of our chargers would start it and we changed the plugs to ensure that it would run well. That was the day I looked around the tractor and figured out it was a 9n. When we finished changing stuff I pulled the harrows to flatten the driveway and tried revving it up, this time it sounded rough and tried to stall above half throttle (it still does that). So i said eh i'll just run it below half. Then after we brought it out to my nan and papa's place to get it fixed up right. During the months of November to January we did a lot. We changed the hydraulic pump and found out it wouldn't work because water had gotten in it and froze, literally exploding the valve chambers of the pump. So we got a new one. I wanted to see if it was a 1939 so i put a magnet to the trans cover and dash and it didn't stick meaning its cast aluminium which means its a 1939. We also replaced the steel mesh grill and custom hood sides with the proper hood sides and a later grill (I'm not paying 1500$ for a 1939 grill). We then replaced three really worn out tires, two front and one back. Then we tested the hydraulics after everything was all back together and they still wouldn’t work. We then brought it home despite the hydraulics not working and I used it for pulling harrows with the drawbar. Then one day I said well I'm going to take my brother and my cousin sledding behind the tractor in gear three, it broke trails through the snow really well and for that reason I named my ford 9n Buster. We had a ton of fun and it turns out the Ford 9N can drift on ice like a sports car can on the road. So we did that for a while until the carb had a float issue and needed to be adjusted, so we fixed that up and continued on our way. Then one day out of the blue it hit me why the hydraulics wouldn’t work, we didn’t put the control valve in far enough. So i drained the hydraulic fluid down to the bottom bolt and took a flathead screwdriver and pushed it in more, i started it up and engaged the pto and it lifted but wouldn't stop so i shut it down and pried the valve out just a little bit and now it lifts and lowers. Now my next plans are to change the resonator on my exhaust out for a proper muffler and to give the tractor a new paint color. The new paint color I do need ideas but as it sits right now i want to paint it pink on the bottom, ford beige on the hood and fenders and the rims are white outer and red hubs and inner. But I am open to suggestions. (here are the before and after pictures so far)
