The trucking industry is seriously effed up...

you are in NYS, your government is different than regular states.
While that may be true, it’s best to consider the CDL a federal driver’s license, while your regular driver’s license is issued by your state of residency.
I have a CDL and my little-populated county cannot renew it. I have to go to the next county over to have that done.

AFAIK, DOT physicals have to be done by a Dr. that's on the "approved list", you can't just get any Dr. you chose to "sign off", is this true?
Never heard of an "approved list" "here". Just need a Dr. that does the necessary exam procedure and fill out the med form. I can have mine done at probably a half dozen places within 30 miles of here. Including some Chiropractors that do them.

Google still works:
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination must be conducted by a licensed "medical examiner" listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. The term includes, but is not limited to, doctors of medicine (MD), doctors of osteopathy (DO), physician assistants (PA), advanced practice nurses (APN), and doctors of chiropractic (DC).

I already knew this from my own experience, but I thought that I would offer up proof at the same time.

The info below would seem to indicate otherwise, see #2. (Or, are we not talking about an "interstate CDL" here?)

x2. It was established in April of 2012. As has been posted the medical professional has to meet requirements and be tested to be on the list. The days of just having a friendly doctor fill out a DOT medical form and hand you a card, is long gone. Like everything else, I expect with some DR shopping you might find one on the list that just takes your money and passes you.

It should be noted that not all holding CDLs required to have medical cards. Driving intrastate is one case that can have exceptions to needing a med card.

I'm out of work so I decided to better myself by learning to drive a truck and getting my CDL. That all ended this afternoon with a failed DOT physical. Blood pressure's a little too high for the sketchy DOT physical nurse when it seems like they will give a medical card to every ancient, blind, crippled, morbidly obese, diabetic, walking heart attack, exploding liver, poster child for kidney disease that can huff and puff their way through the door under their own power.

She kept taking my blood pressure, and it just kept getting higher and higher. Time she was done it was 160/100. I was also ready to tear her in two and feed her bottom half to her top half at that point, so, probably had something to do with it. At the regular doctor I'm 140/80 which is high but my regular doctor doesn't seem alarmed by it.

At least she gave me my money back.

So how do people who are clearly in poor health manage to pass their DOT physicals?
Welll I have mine coming up this Wednesday morning. I am one of the people whose blood pressure goes up while having it taken during the physical. Has always been that way. Just had my hip replacement in December. Probably had my blood pressure taken 8 times after the surgery. Was great every time. It was taken while I was sitting in my recliner in our living room by traveling nurses/physical therapists. Very relaxed then. We will see what happens Wednesday. I will also agree I see many truck drivers who look like they are one step away from a serious heart attack or worse. And no I have no idea how they pass any type of physical.

If you had it done in December get out of that recliner and back to work!! Hip surgery is a two week recovery.

I am back to work. As far as the recovery period you my friend are either very misinformed or dillusional. I was cleared by my surgeon to go back to work February 10. Prior to that checkup I was advised not to even bend over to tie my shoes ! I guess it was different when you had your full hip replacement. Glad you chimed in and added nothing useful to the actual conversation.

Sorry to have offended you! That was not my intent! I was joking with you! I would have been back to work from mine except that I died five days later. That set me back a week, but then I was back to work. It was in Jan. 2020 so I was working remotely. Years ago I was back at work on light duty the morning following double hernia surgery. Six weeks following one of my knee replacements I got into conversation with a lady at the doctor's who was still on crutches six months after her's, due to lack of use. She had to get it manipulated, which is a painful procedure for those who don't get proper exercise. I hope that YTers can avoid that.

Your response did tick me off a little I won’t lie. I guess at the time it really didn’t come across as an attempt at humor. Over and done with. You are correct proper therapy and exercise is important with any joint replacement.

My internist family Dr. had both hips replaced, 3 weeks apart, she was back at work each time after 1 week recovery.
a cousin had her hip replaced and only did rehab exercises when the rehab person was there. That was 6 months ago and she still can't walk right without using a walker.
As my Dr. said, you must do the exercises multiple times, every day.

When I had my knees done I set a 10 inch high Rubbermaid stool in the middle of the living room floor and every time I got up for anything I stepped up and down over it going both ways. My Doc, agreed with it being great exercise. Knees take a lot longer for recovery than hips.

In short- you have been SHOW-Cropped!, Yes, the sad and pathetic can type.

Go get some OTC potassium pills, schedule your next exam, start taking 400 mg for 3 days prior.

Or, fast for 12-16 hours prior to the next exam.

Take your BP with both feet flat on the floor, the BP cuff at heart height and your eyes closed. Take several deep breaths through your nose, just prior and while it's being taken.
