I have a spare drill press that I bought cheap because the base is cracked.
My old pal Kenny kinda hinted that he could use it at home.
So over the past month I have been collecting the things to rig it up for him.
Being a bottom feeder I hafta spend more time looking than I do buying.
The first thing we needed was to make a phase converter to run it.
I found a used 5 hp motor, a surplus enclosure box, ordered a kit with the gizmos for inside the box and made a frame yesterday to mount everything on.
He's a little tight on real estate in his garage so I made it so everything will sit on the base.
Yeah I know, I could have bought a VFD to power the drill but where is the fun in having a shop if you don't make stuff in it?
Besides, those VFDs are all made in China and I just don't wanna do China stuff.

The next step will be to pull the column off the base and weld it.
Shouldn't be hard to do.
Maybe I will make a post about that one of these days.

Yeah, I will tidy up the cords when we get it in place.
Coil the one from the box to the drill and use a wire tie to fasten it out of the way.
The yellow cord goes to that foot switch so it has to stay on the floor.
Step on the switch and it instantly reverses the drill. For power tapping - or panic mode.
I will also cut off the output shaft on the motor. Don't want the dog to get shredded.
Thanks to all.

Looks kind of like the Swedish made Willis drill press that was in the shop I started at in 1973. To this day it is about the only machine they still have and use. They were fully geared head and had a good slow and fast selection of speeds. I can't really tell from the picture but maybe the owner will verify the make and model??? Cleddy

"Don't want the dog to get shredded". "Or panic mode"

That was my morning smile. Thanks. Nice work on the drill press and stand.

If it was my project then the shaft would not get cut off. You have bolts to which you could mount a cover for the shaft. My reasoning is that you would then have the option of having a motor at some future date if needed.

What is a pullbox?

RPC capacitor kit $83
Used motor $40
Enclosure box $27
Female twist lock plug $21
Plus misc scrap steel, welding rod, wire, screws, connectors, paint, etc.
Call it $225?
For a guy with one 3 ph machine a VFD is probably the way to go.
For a guy who might expand his herd of wood/metal 3 ph machines?
Maybe an RPC is better.
I'm real glad I went the RPC route.

A pullbox is the electric box you used My VFD runs two machines Two feeder cables 2HP bridgeport and power3 ph hack saw. Cost of VFD 79 bucks.

Country of origin for things I buy is important to me.
The description at the link you posted does not include that.
Do you know where it was made?
