Timing advance

How much can I safely advance the timing on my 4020 diesel? Late serial number engine with electric fuel shutoff solenoid

Till the crankshaft breaks but advance above recommended spec wont really offer a power advantage though.

I have a 4020 similar to yours. On both of mine I advance the timing about the width of the timing mark or a little more. This is probably 2 or 3 degrees and it really wakes them up. Mike

I agree with Mike, 2-3 degrees of advance, gas or diesel wakes them up.
