Valve issues 3 cyl diesel (JD 350)

I got the great idea to adjust the valves on my 350, this would be the same engine as many green JDs have (1020 IIRC)
The front two valves adjusters do not have any interference fit to the threads so I got the great idea to try and "stake" them in place, but now I see the front rocker can slide over on the shaft, there is not enough shaft to have a cir-clip on the end but I see in the parts manual there is a "plug" the rear seems to have one but the front does not and the parts manual calls for 2.
The thing is I cannot locate the one that I may have knocked out and just want to confirm that there must be on on each end, also what is the cure for the "loose" valve adjustment ???

BTW it was a good idea those front rockers were very loose, like over .045
The thing is now in my service bay which I need to clear.

OK, after looking at it some more it is obvious I knocked the "plug" out of the end of the shaft, the shaft is hollow and it would not oil without a plug in the end.
My machine seems to be a little strange, by serial number it is a 350B but it has a power steering pump like the straight 350.
So I ordered both plugs, the early version was 14.50 the late was 2 dollars and some change, I suppose it is just pounded in like a freeze plug, does not sound very secure, still not sure what to do about the loose adjustment.

According to the parts catalog the 350Bs up to serial number 142199 used a pump like the 350. Starting with serial number 142200 they used reverser oil for the steering assist.

I would replace any rockers that will not properly hold the adjusting screw.

It is not uncommon for a parts catalog to show one of an item and say the number required is more than visible/drawn in the picture. I believe the plug taps in the end of the shaft. I think some had a shim washer between the plug and rocker as well.

I just checked and the rockers are NLA :(
My machine is serial number 1160xx so it is a 350B, but there is no model number preceding the serial number like the parts book shows...

Maybe I can drill the arm for a set screw :)
EDIT actually I am sure I could, I have a good stock of small to minute ones in my stash, but I will give the aftermarket ones a try.

If this were my machine (so I would be responsible only to myself if there were later issues) I'd thoroughly clean the oil off the the threads, internal and external and assemble the adjusters into the rockers, adjust the valves, then apply some "wicking Loctite".

(SORRY for bothering you with my suggestion that wasn't even worth a comment!)

According to the serial number lists on Lavoy's jdcrawlers website the first 350B serial number is 117500 in 1971. The 1970 serial number range for the straight 350s is 102137 to 117499. By those numbers your 1160xx is a 1970 (straight) 350.

The parts catalog shows the part number for the rocker as RE31973. It also shows an alternate part number (A&I) of A-RE31973. If the JD one is not available ask the dealer about the A&I one (JD owns A&I). Searching using the JD part number turns up a number of sources of used rockers, including PartsASAP, parent company of YT.

T23469 plug is 1/2" and R54565 is 15/32" according to the parts catalog.

You are right, I was reading the numbers wrong, thinking they were ending numbers not beginning numbers.

It looks like AT18129 or AT22665 are also sub for the RE31973 and should be available, will have to check with the local dealer in the morning, I have to be careful as they cannot be of much help as they are a green dealer.

Good luck asking about those numbers. I think you will find your John Deere dealer is going to go by the RE31973 number which is the number that all those earlier numbers sub up to in his system. Doing a part search for those numbers using the part search in the JD parts catalog, that was what I found. Aftermarket suppliers will generally list all the numbers, current or superseded a given part will cover, which is what the ad you posted shows.

Did the dealer do a system search for the rockers? My dealer has done that and found parts from another dealer for me. You can ask you dealer to check on the A&I one as well. They might be able to get that one as A&I is their aftermarket line.

I don't know, I have to go to town tomorrow so I will stop by for a personal visit.
I did see the dimensions of the plugs but cannot get my calipers in there to measure, I will likely pull the shaft tomorrow so I can measure, it feels like 1/2" :)

I see aftermarket arms using the RE31973 number for 26 bucks, maybe even the chicoms could get that part right, not like it is a rocket part..

I went ahead and bought two of the aftermarket ones off of Amazon, I really don't like doing business there but at least I will receive it in a reasonable amount of time.
I am waiting for an oil pressure gauge for my 1900 Oliver, it has already been "miss sent" to the wrong destination (post office) twice by USPS so it is over a week late.....

I did find the spring washer that was on that end of the rocker shaft, (it was laying on the right track) not that there was any doubt there was a plug, I have still not found the old plug, the good thing is it was too large to go down into the engine.
HOPEFULLY all those parts will be here tomorrow, although I decided to replace the amp meter, the seat and the throttle cable (will be nice to run at something besides mid throttle) so it will probably be next weekend before I will get it out of the shop.

One issue I am having is finding the part number for the hydraulic filter that is in the reservoir, I cannot find the parts breakdown for the dozer attachment, it is probably there and I will keep looking.
EDIT I found it by just searching Bulldozer it is "6300 (for JD350 and JD350B) Bulldozer - PC915"

The blade and the hydraulics for it is a separate parts catalog. They did not include the blades and loaders in the crawler parts books until the 350C and after. You need to identify the model of the blade and use that to find the right parts catalog. If you don't know the model describe it and post some pictures.

EDIT I found it by just searching Bulldozer it is "6300 (for JD350 and JD350B) Bulldozer - PC915
But it has parts listed as -1965 and 1965- so I am not sure if they are talking serial or year as it says "Serial No. or Year"
The 350 only dates to 1965 so I am a little confused but still inclined to think it is referring to year model....
I will look around and see if I can find a date plate or at least a stamped serial number.
The later filter is a AT45422 and the earlier one is AT24274
BTW my machine does not have the model number stamped under the seat as shown in the parts manual only the serial number :(

OK now I am a little confused, the dozer I found does not have a 6 way blade and it shows two control sticks instead of the single stick with a T handle like mine has, time to look farther...

It may not have a model but the serial number is for a 1970 straight 350.

It looks like the 6305 but that parts book does not have the "hydraulics and decal" section that the 6300 has,, what the heck???
Am I to assume it is covered in the 6300 parts book and the 6305 is just a sub section with the differences between the two?
