What I did to my 8N today(and yesterday)

Yesterday I took off the shifter cover and put a new gasket on it. I didn’t think there was one on it, it appeared to be leaking around the cover but I’m pretty sure now the oil was migrating from the leaking steering arm seals. Oh yeah, be careful when removing this cover, there is a detent spring and ball under the rear center of the cover for one of the shift rails. If you do remove them. Place them in a magnetic parts dish. If you don’t have one, go get one. They are great. I will remove the steering box and take it apart when I get the engine off. Tractor had a heavy hanger strap anchored to the RH hydraulic inspection cover that went around the muffler. The strap is bent and I couldn’t tighten it so I installed a new one that bolts to one of the axle trumpet studs and holds the exhaust pipe instead of the muffin. A new muffin and tailpipe assembly will be installed during overhaul and possibly a new manifold, the exhaust flange on the old one don’t look so good.

ah, u gotta love those parts that make a break for freedom the first chance they get.

u sound way more ambitious than me today. i'll call today a winner if i manage to make any progress making space for my new ZTR. it's finally officially time to put the 1991 Craftsman (Murray) to rest.

Funny, I'm fighting carburetor troubles with my 1997 Yard Machine mower. I'm suspecting fuel hose break down due to modern gas in 27 year old fuel lines.

Sounds like fun. I was working on cleaning up the barn so I have a somewhat organized area to work on both tractors.

Maybe we should start a thread titled “What did you do to your tractor today?”
Those kind of post are always popular on the auto forums.
