What to do with the rope from a little Genius plow

Last fall I got a couple of trip lift little genius plows and had one plowing for the first time today. I would guess based on where it came from its about 40 years since the last time it was in the ground. Worked pretty good all things considered. My question is what to do with the pull rope for tripping and raising the plow. I wouldn't think it should be tied to the seat since the hitch on these plows is made to give way when you hit a non-moveable rock. Was there an attachment made for the rope so it would come unattached also?

Our old G had a loop thing that was open on the bottom that hooked to seat so rope could pop off when hitch released itself. I used a spring and piece of baling wire with loose twist so rope would pull out of it.

I make a big J out of aluminum wire and put on the end of the rope Just hook on seat if breakaway works hook just straighten out and doesn't hurt anything.

The seats had a little piece of metal to tie to that was deliberately light so it would fail if needed. It was pretty common for people to use some baling wire to hook the rope to that piece. You wanted the wire to be the point that pulled loose.

I do what plow peddler said. I hook the J around the shift lever of my Farmall BN. You didn't say which tractor you have so the attachment point might be different. I do the same thing with the angle adjustment for my disk. Good job of you thinking about that.

As was said: make an open hook out of a piece of wire and hook it to someplace on the tractor. If the plow unhooks, the wire bends and just detaches.

Whatever you do, don't tie that rope to yourself. If the plow unhooks, it will pull you right out of the seat and the tractor will keep going without you.

That works fine in low & 3rd, but what if you are plowing in 2nd?

If you've ever seen a flat tab of steel with a hole in it sticking out from under the seat, this is what it's for.

The way my Dad told me how to do it, was use a short piece of baler twine, ideally binder twine because it's thinner to tie the rope to the tab. That way when the plow broke away, it would snap the thin twine.

If you get a Little Genius with hydraulic lift, make sure you have breakaway hydraulic couplers on the tractor, or you're going to end up with ripped hoses.

Here is the thin tab being talked about to attach light wire or twine like already said.

I read on this forum years ago that some guy tied it to the big spring under the seat . My father talked to a guy that somehow wrapped it around his finger. Both bad results.

A good enough rope tied to the seat, might pull it out from under you if the plow trips & you don't stop in time. My rope has a hair pin cotter pin on the end of it. That clips on to the rope "ring" I made for the back of the seat pan. And it always gets a test yank before I go out.

When I first started out, I used twine tied to the seat spring. Hit a rock & it yanked the spring out & launched it the opposite direction with enough force to snap the twine & keep going. Made it about 30 yards before hitting the ground. It might have been curtains for someone riding the 'bar.

I have always used a piece of wire tied onto the rope and then make a loop through the piece of metal everyone has talked about and if the plow unhooks it will pull the wire straight and off the seat. Believe me I used this all the time as a kid and several times the plow tripped and it unhooked from the seat without any damage to me or the tractor!!
