There should not be any diesel in that area unless a fuel line was leaking & dripping down there. The front cover is just open to the crankcase and should be full (to dipstick level) of engine oil.

No. Not that I can think of.

Probably not unless it was something relatively catastrophic.

It is pretty much all self contained in there. The little fork with the 2 pins (in the bottom right of the picture) slides into a governor flywheel on the crankshaft.

Hello,Are you sure it is the governor and not the injection pump? Sometimes the pump racks get sticky and will cause that. The rack should move just by tipping the pump side to side. I know a lot of people end up in a troubleshooting downward spiral when messing with the governor so be organized and document any changes you make.
The service manual says:

The fuel pump governor has broken. These fuel pumps are really touchy to mess with.Hello,
I am having a similar run away throttle issue and am looking to buy a service manual for my ym1601d, can you recommend a place to buy one?
Thank you for all of the great information I will follow up.The fuel pump governor has broken. These fuel pumps are really touchy to mess with.
Matt has a great video covering all aspects of the governor.
Now, if it's the fuel pump itself, most everyone reaches out to Mike.

Thank you sir, I was able to find a manual that turned out to be adequate and in englishThe manual closest to your tractor would probably be the 220/226 manual. Not sure it is available here. A phone number is given. Might be worth a call. https://www.tractorpartsasap.com/service-manual-new-yanmar-133504.html
Yes, just like this,Thank you sir, I was able to find a manual that turned out to be adequate and in english
I bought a digital copy from a gentleman on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/305702999405
My cross over connection point was when I was able to identify that they were selling an injector pump on amazon that would fit both the JD 750 and my yanmar 1601D. The truth is, yanmar was building (motor, injector pump, etc) for John Deer at the same time or right after they were building for the Yanmar name in the years around 1980.
The YTOG has the manual for free in PDF. Most of the time, these eBay sellers come to our site, download the manuals and then sell them. We give them away for free. No ads on the site, it's a support group for Yanmar made machines. We are going on 40+ years now.Thank you sir, I was able to find a manual that turned out to be adequate and in english
