Finally decided to replace leaking right axle seal and brakes on my MF 50. Removed tire, drum, brake shoes, loosened the 16 nuts. See I have to disconnect the brake lever shaft yet, as its connected to the brake inner plate.

I assume axle will pull right out once the 16 nuts are removed. Do i need to be careful of anything?

I am hoping only to have to replace the inner seal, but will also have to grease the bearing. Am i right in assuming the outer seal is only for bearing grease?

Also looking for tips on re-assembling. Thanks

Left axle seal and brakes look fine.

Yes, Be careful when reassembly to not damage new seal. I have seen where axle was blocked and rolled on pipes both on and off and it worked well.

So removed the fenders, disconnected the brake lever yoke pin, removed the drum and shoes, removed the ~ dozen axle nuts, some studs came out, then pulled the axle out and removed the brake shield.

So I easily see the damaged inner seal, rubber flat and chipped, on axle housing that I will be replacing.

The axle shaft and bearing looks fine, but how much play should I see, and how to measure? I plan to only grease it up?

Inner seal removed and replaced easily in the axle housing. Brake back shield cleaned up. Axle cleaned and inspected, no problem. Bearing left on, injected and worked in grease as possible. Shims cleaned and reinstalled. Slid axle back in no problem, made sure to align brake lever level, bolted up fine.

Now just have to install brake shoes and adjust to minimal friction. Also have to remove other side shoes, may as well replace as tire and drum already off.

No pics

Installation was much easier with brake drum tools, but the pliers I had were too small to lever with so had to carefully pull pry and snap in.
Right side no issue, adjusted easy to no turn, then backed off 4 clicks to no drag.
Left side, the only dry and working side prior to this repair, the camshaft was binding on shoes, not sure if someone over adjusted connector rod yoke so had to loosen, but this side required very little adjustment from fully closed adjuster.
Now just have to install tires and refill the transmission.
